Hello our 300 started useing some oil here lately. It still runs great and has plenty of power. Great oil pressure. We tore it down to re ring it and give the head a once over. Found many broken and brittle rings. Pistons, sleeves bearings, crank all look good. Were wondering if we can hone and or ridge ream this thing and put a set of rings in. and be ok? were going to rebuild the head, new seals or guides which ever it is. valve job. the works. and reseal it. do you all think we'll be alright. thanks in advance

Take one of the old rings off the piston and then put it in the sleeve to check the end gap.
The gap on my old rings were about .190. After the ridge reaming and honing the sleeves, the end gap on the new rings were at .035. I think my sleeves were tighter than yours and so your new rings will most likely have a larger gap.
I bet it will work for you, but I think you may wish you had done everything now.

the sleeves are worn about 5 thousands with in a .001 of being round. the ring grooves and the pistons look good. I figured with all the broken rings I would find the sleeves chewed up also but they'll not. no scoringat all.???

If you are planning on keeping the tractor I think you should pull and tear the engine down.
New sleeves, pistons, have the crankshaft measured for wear, new cam bearings and have the head reworked. Hal

Chances are more than good that those broken rings have scored the sleeve walls. Run a good hone through them and see what they look like before installing the new rings and pistons. I have seen this many times and you will be waisting your time and money if they are scored. You often can't tell until busting off the glazing of the cylinder walls

Get the sleeves miked at the top just below the ridge. If they are wore more than .010 to .015 put in new sleeves.

If your sleeves, pistons, and ring grooves all measure within spec. I would re-ring it. Based solely on your mention of a ridge reamer and broken rings, I would say go with a new kit.

Although I cannot recommend it, I cannot totally condemn it either. A lot of people do it that way and seem satisfied. In the long run, you get what you pay for, I guess. mike durhan
