Thanks everyone for your help. I pulled the head and got the valves loose. I have some questions about putting the head back on (as I have never done it):
1. Seeing as it is a cast-iron block and head, can I use a scraper or razer blade to get the old head gasket off, or what should I use?
2. Is it permissable to reuse head bolts on these motors, or do you need to replace them after each removal?
3. It says in the service manual to coat the top of the block with a thin layer of lubricant. What lubricant should I use (grease, engine oil, etc.)?
Thanks.

Tools required , One torque wrench , one gskt scraper some 80-120 grit emery cloth , copper coat feeler gauges and a BOOK for the torque specs. and the patteren to torquen the bolts down doing it in three steps . First seting is between 35-40 ft.lbs next is 60-65 then the final set the valves get the engine running and warm up to operating temp and retorque and reset the valves. Twenty to thirty mins. of run time should be enough.

Using a sharp hard steel scraper (razorbades are ok, but weak) is no problem Just do not scratch the surfaces, they are quite tough. A 3M scratch pad rotary tool with hook and loop (velcrolike) pad attachment to a small shaft mounted disk is the very finest final residual remover ever.
Do use the bolts again, they are quite understressed and unless they were being used in a pulling tractor, are quite reusable.
The new gasket will have instructions in the package. If not use coppercoat spray on both sides of the gasket and let it dry befor assembly. don't put any lube on the surfaces, it is old thinking back to when they needed to be reused. Go for it, JimN

1)I use a wire brush on my side grinder and a small one on my die grinder for those tight areas my side grinder wont get, but there usually isnt much debris from a head gasket unless someone used sealer on it.
2)I have reused them before, but have had some nuts strip and studs break, so thats up to you.
3)I have never used anything on head gaskets.
