Hopefully I got a good deal here...

$4000 got me this International 656 Diesel. Its the Row Crop (but not a Farmall) version with hydrostatic drive, 4400 hours, ser#10670. I can tell the tractor has seen some hard use by a number of welds on the 3pt hitch, but the tractor runs well, doesn't smoke once its warmed up, hydro appears to deliver full power in high, low and reverse. Currently the wheels are set at their narrowest width; if I can break the bolts loose I'll widen them out a bit since I have hilly fields.

It also came with a 7' heavy duty brush mower that needs blades but otherwise looks serviceable.

I've ordered a owners manual, but I'd like to see either a schematic or wiring diagram. Is there one online somewhere? There seem to be a lot of dangling wires on this tractor and most of the electrical accessories don't work.

Out of curiosity, how common is the I656 Row-Crop version compared to the Utility?

you got a good deal. the mower should be worth $4-500 by itself. the 7" mower may be the cause of some of the welds on the 3pt. i"d hate to try carrying it on my 656s. i have a 656 gas hydro like yours that says "row crop" on the badge, and a 656 gas gear drive that dad bought new that says "high clear" on the badge. both are the high utilities. there was another gas gear drive hi utility on a farm across the river several years ago. i don"t believe there that many hi clears vs the number of utilities.
if yours hasn"t had a loader on it, count yourself lucky. the way the front end is hung, the loader will wear it real fast. they do turn on a dime, but i wish i"d never had loaders on mine.

Your new owners manual will have the wiring diagrams in it.

I think you did just fine at that price.

Those little guys are some tough little buggers; almost identical in every way to a Farmall 656, just sit closer to the ground.

All you need now is a set of weights up front, 'cause that mower is gonna lift it right off the ground. :>)

Just remember to never, ever try to pull start it. That's what takes those hydros out.

Allan

Evan: I doubt if there are very many high crop 656 utilities around, it's the first one I've seen. Hitch welds on a 656 shouldn't give you a whole lot to be concerned about, it was a weak point for that size tractor in my opinion.

My biggest concern would be an old hydro, but it sounds as though yours has had a recent rebuild, being good forward, reverse, low and high. In my day I worked mainly with quite new tractors, thus many of the problem we see on here today had not yet happened in my time. Having followed YT discussion close to 8 years now, and the problems folks encounter buying these 30, 40, 50 and 60 year old tractors, hydraulic problems seem to be the most common that surprise new buyers of old tractors. Hydraulic being the one function that looks decent with tractor cold yet falls apart fastest with heat buildup.

Go to CaseIH. com and click on search for parts, then click on search for parts right here in the lower right corner. type in 656 and all kinds of things will come up. Don't know how many there were.

Thanks for the tip on using caseih.com. Its hard to make out some of the details in the wiring parts diagram, but its a start!

By the way, I posted the 7' mower in the Help Identify gallery since I don't know its make and model.
