Doing the 12volt conversion with the GM 10SI alternator. Checking all out and found that PIN 1 is dead shorted to ground. This is a new rebuilt alternator, does that mean that it is bad? Really looking for some help with this one.
Thanks Very Much!!!
Keith

Keith - All connected and at rest a good 10SI alternator should show very low resistance (on the order of an ohm or two) between the #1 terminal and ground. Voltage appearing at #1 should be very close to 0.0 volts

However when in operation and charging the #1 terminal will show ~12 volts.

Punch below for a link to the wiring diagram.

SMOKE TEST
Pin #1 is the exciter current from the diode or resistor,or the idiot light, and from there from the ignition terminal (hot when turned on). If you used a digital meter, it might appear to have zero resistance, especially if set on high ohms range. I would put 12 volts to it as follows: use jumpers with the neg jumper to alternator frame, and positive jumper to a piece of wire with a spade connector on it to go to pin #1. apply porew and if no smoke, I would put it in the circuit. The only thing that could be dammaged is a diode, or resistor (as per the circuit Bob M provided. It is likely OK. JimN

While it seems I posted a pic some time ago of a conversion my Dad did once, I think you meant Bob M, right? He gave you the link.

Hope he dont let the smoke out lol cuz then that lectrical stuff stops workin. I agree with ya that lil side No 1 excitation terminal ought to read fairly low resistance to frame cuz if you apply voltage to it as you described n shes not running, thats how n why n where an idiot light gets a ground current return path to lite the bulb Eh. Then once shes running and self exciting theres near the same voltage there as on the input so theres no current flow through the light n she goes out, at least thats they way I understand em to work but Im more of a genny kinda guy.

Take care n keep cool Jim, Its hot n dry n all burned up here in southern Indiana

I did mean Bob M, (oh well) the info is good, It is 88 here, has been a disaster drought in central MN corn and beans (unless irrigated) are 38" and 6" respectively, and as golden as sugar maple leaves in the fall. We had severe weather here on Monday night 3" in an hour and winds west of us. JimN
