I have an old battery out of a mower here. Guy Who disposes of them also sell them used. This guy takes them for free, sells them for half what they cost new. Any way to prevent a battery from ever working again?

Gents:

With a few exceptions (war, for example), I’ve never been excited about destroying things just to keep someone else from using them. Our society at large produces goods – airplanes, MP3 players, refrigerators, batteries, what have you – using raw materials and labor. These goods are more valuable to society than the raw materials they came from. Destroying a battery not only reduces its value to all of us; it may even turn it into a liability. No one (including Lanse) benefits.

The owner of a battery has the legal right to destroy it, but the moral obligation to make a reasonable effort to preserve it. Aren’t we supposed to be responsible stewards of the items God gives to us?

Maybe Lanse feels justified because he thinks the “battery guy” is involved in some sort of unethical activity. The respondents seem to disagree, and I must say I’m with the majority on this one.

That brings up a tough question, though: Is it all right for producers to pour milk down the drain (or kill livestock) to shore up prices, but not all right for Lanse to destroy his own battery? Does the motivation justify the action (trying to make money on one hand, vs. trying to keep someone else from making money on the other hand)?

Oops! Sorry about the religious/political subject “drift”. It’s supposed to be a tractor page.

So - How ‘bout them Farmalls? :-)

Lanse I havent saw a beating like this since the trash can beating scene in the Godfather, with James Caan.
Be fortunate someone wants batteries.I dont know what state you live in and if they have a pop/beer can redemption if they do ask an old timer what your roadsides looked like before the can redemption law,If not, consider the cans and bottles discarded batteries, because thats what will happen if there is no value for any one.

MY ADVICE AS A 7 YEAR SUBSCRIBING VETERAN OF THIS SITE-GROW UP OR GET OUT-SILENCE CAN BE VERY PAINFUL.

Lanse: You are the closest to a horse's posterior we've seen in a year or two now. Who in hell cares if a collector of old batteries finds one good one in a 100. Over the years I've dealt with several collectors of old batteries, none of them ever appeared to be overly wealthy.

The one item I've noticed is somewhere in the past 10 years they stopped coming. Must be a lot of folks like you around. I now have to pay money to get rid of old batteries. Stacking them up on your property somewhere is not the answer. I know of an estate dealing with that one right now. The children who thought dad's property was going to be a nice little nestegg, are now finding out dad left them a bill of expence, their net worth from the property is a minus figure on 20 acres.

Have you ever heard Treat people as you would have them treat you. You can't use that old battery, so what if the next guy makes a nickel on it. Life is what you make of it. Don't get off to a bad start. What goes around comes around. I could go on, but I think it is pointless.

The word disposes is generally accepted as appropriately being rid of something. Appropriately in this case is selling the recycleable batteries for their metal value 4 to 6$ eash. If some of them can be charged and used for any purpose as a electrical storage device, then the polution and effort that went into making it is being capitalized on. It is way not your place to even suggest what he should do with them. He would never collect them to drop them in the ditch. So revamp your thinking to accept his right to salvage and profit from others who give him batteries. JimN

I think you are getting way in over your head. You want to be some sort of morale compass for a man whom you don't know the entire story. You heard what he said, assumed otherwise, and now want to prove how much smarter you are by saying "HA HA! You'll never get any more use out of MY battery!"
It's not a problem with you, per say. But I have a serious problem with the attitude you are writing about. Quite frankly, if your battery is unusable, and he can make use of it, then so be it.

I'm assuming you want it properly disposed of so it will be recycled and you can feel good about your part in saving the planet. (I'm assuming this based on other posts you've made) Well, he IS recycling the battery!
Anyway, like the others have said, I think you are going about this poorly, and speaks a lot of your immaturity. Chew on that and maybe take a lesson from it.

Lanse. I have a nice older Cub Cadet mower for you. Let me know if you want it so I can put sugar in the gas, sand in the oil, and make some pinholes in the tires.

I heard a long time ago that you could rebuild batteries by draining them and pouring something in to clean the plates. Refill with acid? I have bought rebuilt batteries before but they didn't last. With the price of metal these days the lead in the plates has got to be a factor. Also, anyone ever hear of putting asprin in them? JCW sells snake oil for batteries also. David.

David: I wonder if perhaps you may have missed Lanse's point; He wants to know how to ruin the battery before he turns it over, so the old used battery man can't sell it. Lanse apparently enjoys being mean to people. Very sad. mike

Why would you want to be mean to someone trying to make a living selling used batteries? Why would you want to remain silent and smile while someone poured a gallon of oil through a tractor and onto a floor? Disturbing behavior. mike

YEs, but it is not easy or reasonable to spend any time doing it. and it might make recycling it harder. If an old man makes a buch turning batteries, what difference does it make. I believe many batteries are discarded before their time as the result of other issues of vehicle maintenance. If he provides batteries, and people buy them, and have not complained, they probably have service life left in them. You are selling mowers that someone bought new, and fixing a few items, and selling them for a profit, I do not see a substantial difference. JimN
