I did these tonight.... .017 hot. Valve adjustment is pretty easy but it makes someone like me feel pretty mechanical! My hiccup at mid to high RPM's is gone. I have never heard an engine run so sweet (after I was done with it).

It also idles a little better. I drove it around a long time and REALLY like the sound of it under power. The idle is not right though. I have a lot to check. Air filter, fuel screens, maybe have a tinker with the idle adjustment if everything else is OK. Anything else on the list, let me know.

Alternator goes in tomorrow. It fires right up to 20 amps but within a minute or two there is no reading at all on the gauge. Can't hurt to have it looked at. Guess I am not asking much except maybe help with the idle if you think of anything.
Thanks again!

Hmmm....maybe I will hold off on that alternator check until I get a new (real) switch on there that will not leak current every time it gets a little damp out. Thanks guys.

When you say "sweet spot" in regards to the idle, are you talking about an adjustment to the carburetor or are you talking about tweaking the position of the distributor? I am SOOOO close! If I could get it to to idle without all that stuttering and just tick along quietly it would be really great. Like I said before I am going to check the screens, tighten all the carb connections and carefully play with the idle screw to see what happens but if there is another trick out there, hit me with it and I will give it a try. Thanks guys!

Dave, Mike is exactly right. After running for a bit the needle should be right at 0. You know everthing is OK if so. When it stays up or below 0 is when you have problems. The idle thing is a trial and error type thing. Every one will have a sweet spot and you will have to find that yourself. If is idleing way to high you may have a governor issue and the book covers that.

"Within a few minutes there is no reading on the gauge." That is the way they are supposed to act when the battery is strong and fully charges after a couple of minutes. May not be a problem. mike
