I just completed rebuilding my first engine, it's on a 1941 Farmall H. Got it all back together and it fired right up. Only thing is, it won't 'smooth' out. All 4 plugs are firing. Has new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, points, condensor. I didn't rebuild the carb since it was/is in excellent working condition. New sleeves, pistons, rings, and a complete head job. I set the tappet clearance at .017 and the points at .020 I can advance and retard the timing until it begins to stall, but there is no location inbetween where it runs smoothly. I have an even 88lbs compression across the board. I am really beginning to get frustrated, and would greatly appreciate any fresh ideas or insights that you all may have. Thanks! Aaron

I agree with Mike, go and retorque the manifold. or the carb to manifold. Those gaskets sometimes need several retorques before they seat. The manifold on my H was super loose when I got it. Tightened it up and it purrs like a kitten at a cream tank spill. Before that, I couldn't get it to idle right and it had a miss at higher speeds.

I would clean the sediment that was laying in the bottem of the carburetor when you tipped it over from the upright position when you handled it.The sediment is now where?clean the carburetot with a spray can of brake clean on the outside first as this will soften the gasket so after you loosen the two halves you can tap them to free them up.Then blow out while wet from the cleaner.Do not let it dry before blowing out.You may need a gasket for the BOWL to THROTTLE BODY. If you're sure your carb is good and you are sure your plug wires are on in the correct order, and you're sure your valves are set properly, I'd start looking for a vacuum leak around the manifold. mike
