Started my "57 130 on Saturday to do some bushhogging, and couldn"t get it in gear. Clutch wouldn"t fully disengage. Removed the inspection cover on the bell housing, and low and behold there was a huge mouse nest inside the housing. Removed the mess, and the clutch worked fine. Problem solved. My question: how in the world could the critter have gotten in there. Cover plate is tight; can"t find any other means of entry.

This material was packed around my flywheel on my garden tractor. You had to pull the engine to get the fan shroud off so I used a piece of wire to snake it out. It just took a little longer. Hal

I had that once. Nest between the cover and the flywheel. Started it up, and after 2 mins or so, started smoking, real bad. 5 mins later, no more smoke. Killed the engine and got the burned stuff out under the cover. Could have gotten a wrench and pulled the cover, but I had free time and it was fun. =}

My tractor has a driveshaft that would've needed to be disconnected and the engine raised high enough to remove the fan shroud. After I fished out all the material I could with the wire I started the tractor and pieces of dead mice and some more junk blew out of there. I need to check that more often. Hal

Mountaincabin: Your lucky Mr. mouse's nest didn't go around the release bearing and twisting the linkage that activates it. Mouse nests have been known to be cause for splitting the tractor.

On your question, "How did he get in?" Is the inspection cover in place at back of torque tube where you adjust the clutch? Is the small cover in place where you grease release bearing. A lot of tractors came without the cover back at clutch adjustment, and mice can get through the torque tube.

My tractors don't have covers at back. I find the best way to keep mice out is spray inside of torque tube with WD-40 every 3 months. I never had this problem back when tractors were worked every day. Mice don't seem to like a mobile home.
