My 301 keeps running lean. I don't think I have the right carb. It is clean and the float is right. I can turn the load screw all the way out and even take it out and it still won't smoke any even with the throttle wide open. I think it is a 460 carb. I have heard that you can replace and drill out stuff. I have heard the terms metering stem, venturi etc. I have no idea what any of this stuff is. Could someone send me a picture or explain what are all these jets and stuff called in the carb?

The Super H/Super M -- up, including the 460/560 have the adjusting screw 5 turns out for max power. I think they were used until solenoids replaced the adjustment, perhaps the 706/806. Other than dirt getting inside you probably don't need the screw. It can be turned in for better economy where less than max power is needed. You should get the correct carb for your engine.

remember the 460 carb is small for i think a 221 inch eng, you need more air now with 80 more cubes. you really need a bigger carb but you can fix yours it will be cheaper.

take 4 bolts out and remove the bottom half you can do this with carb on tractor, the metering stem comes out with a 7/16 socket, count the holes in it, you may drill the same size holes in it till you have at least 8 which works good, the venturi is the tube that will be between the bottom section and goes up into carb, about 2 1/2 inches long has number on it hard to see, you need a 30 or 32. your high speed adj screw take it out and theres a main jet seat behind it, you may need to drill it out very slighty, you can do this with carb on tractor, then you can adjust your high speed screw to get proper amt of fuel.dont forget when you drill the metering stem count all holes, when you drill it every hole will be straight thru and count as two.

A 460 carb can run it, at low rpms. the late carbs added more fuel circuits to compensate excesive fuel delivery thru its primary load jet. Thats where you find the big 35 venturi most common in the late carbs that have 2 port delivery in the side of the throttle body, that pulls fuel right out of the bowl, bypassing the main load jet and allowing the main jet to run leaner, yet, delivering more fuel at the same time. 460 carb only has one port, anything with a 301 had the two port throttle body Ive found. Big difference in the way they run with a 715 combine carb, Vs a 460/560 carb. The 460 throttle body can do the job with larger jets, but it might suffer idle quality.

Sounds like its just plan and simple clogged up. One trick that works some times is pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and then take out the main jet and spray carb cleaner into the ain jet. Spray at least one full can of it in and then see if that helps. If not then you will probable need to put a kit in the carb and most good kits will explain what is what in a carb

It isn't dirty. Every passage way is clean. The 301 out of a 715 combine had bigger jets for more fuel. This is a 460 carb which is basically the same except for the things like the main jet size. My question is what are the two little jets on the outside ring that contains the main jet? What size are they supposed to be for a 301?

Geeze - that's a tall order to fill over a forum posting. Maybe someone can do it. If not, is there not a repair shop in your area where you could take the carb and someone could/would point out the various components for you?
No offense, but from what you have said, you have a somewhat limited knowledge of carburetors. (So do I, for that matter.) Therefore, I wouldn't drill out anything - at least, yet. Good carbs can be hard to come by. mike durhan
