F20 pulley shaft leak

I just don’t seem to be able to keep the belt pulley shaft on my F20 from leaking. I’ve replaced the packing, and the shaft bearings feel good, but she still leaks.

Has anyone ever replaced the packing with a modern neoprene lip seal? I don’t see why it wouldn’t work.

Thanks,

Scott

I installed lip seals on the PTO & belt pulley on my '27 regular. I measured the OD of the shaft & approximate ID of the housing - threaded portion. The bearing house found ones that fit. I then made a ring (probably 1 1/2" wide) from pipe as a retainer. The pipe was almost as large as the OD of the seal.

Slid the seal all the way back, squirted silicone sealant where the OD of the seal met the threads. Set the ring in and the tighten the packing nut snug. The nut presses on the ring, the ring presses the seal. Haven't leaked in 10 years (but only gets 1 hour of running a year).

Hope this helps. kevin

I have had success by just adding more packing.
