Super MTA Clutch?

All of a sudden, I can"t get the M into gear... just grinds. It had been working fine. I had noticed though that with the TA pulled back, the tractor had been moving slower than usual. With the TA forward, it seems fine though. Clutch does nothing. Does this just sound like it needs a new clutch or could I be encountering some other type of problem? I have had the tractor 18 years and have never adjusted the clutch. It always had been fine. The clutch adjustment is in the rod or the peddal it appears. Thanks

I have checked the clutch pedal free play through the years and have always found that it did not need adjusting. I think the clutch pedal is the only adjustment. It has quite a bit of maintenance. This problem seemed different though. I think it may have something to do with the linkage or something not releasing correctly. I"ll take a look at it this morning.

It may need a new clutch, but I am not completely certain about that yet. When I bought it, the guy did not say anything about the clutch, so it has probably been in there a long time. Thanks.

Just came in from doing some hay. The SMTA clutch seems to be working okay now. When I started baling, had to have it in gear to get going. By the time I finished baling, I could shift it in and out of gear okay using the clutch. Something must have been sticking. We"ll see how it does tomorrow.

Just hopin' and prayin' that it somehow "heals" itself, right? Contrary to popular belief, tractors are not living organisms.

Regular maintenance probably would have prevented the problem you're having. If you've never adjusted the clutch or TA on this tractor, and you've been running it for 18 years, it almost certainly needs it BADLY.

This problem is not just going to go away. It's one thing if the tractor sits out in the rain for months without moving. Then the clutch may be rusted to the flywheel. If the tractor has been used regularly, then something is wrong, and it's not going to go away.

You've got nothing but an hour to lose by adjusting the TA and clutch, and it may stave off the problem for a while.

First, get your owner's manual out & adjust the linkages according to the book!
If the clutch is not working after adjustment, then start looking "deeper" into the problem.

With the ta lever forward, it pulls just fine. In fact, I finished baling with it yesterday. Just have to start it in gear. I think it could be a linkage problem of some sort. It had been going in and out of gear fine, but now, clutch in, it just grinds. It does seem to be moving slowing than normal with the ta lever pulled back. Forward speed is fine and it will pull, no slipping. Maybe something is wrong with the throwout bearing. Thanks.

If you are on the t/a side and it"s slipping it"s the t/a clutch and if you are in direct drive and it slips it"s probably the t/a. You can take a look at the clutch by looking in the inspection plate.
