I have a 41H and when I started it tonight it started smoking alot( electrical wires melting). I removed a battery cable and what I found was the wire coming from the regulator(black box on top of generator)to the switch box. Had melted all the insulation because the connector shorted against the regulator housing. My question is I need to repair in a week what could I use that I could get quik

I had a different kind of fire on my M last week hooked uo to Bush Hog type mower and started to cut small pasture. After about 10 minutes saw a roaring fire under hood cut across to water trough but by time I got there fire had about burned out. Turns out birds had built HUGE staw nest on top of manifold lucky tracor was about grease and oil free or would have probaly lost it.

Most people would:

1. Wrap the melted area with electrical tape and call it fixed.

2. Run a new wire and zip-tie it in, leaving the old one.

If you melted more than just the one wire...

Disconnect both ends of the wire. Use an ohm meter to be sure it is not melted through to other wires or ground within the loom. If it is not crossed to anything, I would look it over for bare spots and tape it as rusty indicates. Melted wires that are dammaged can cause additional fires when re used. The safest method is to use another 10gauge wire and new connectors, abandoning the old wire. Then tape the new so it doesnot chafe on anything. JimN

I did move the connector away from the regulator housing and it started right up and the generator still charges. So I will go and get some 10 ga. wire and connectors and replace, trying to feed it through the clothe covering
Thanks
Bob

Wrap it up tight with electricians tape and call it fixed.

Hey Rusty, I am no expert, but if it got that hot wouldn't the wire be kinda brittle? I have seen this in other wire, just dont remember how how it had gotten.

I guess it does depend on just how hot it did get. The correct way to fix it would be to replace with new wire. A quick fix to get back in the field would be to do what I said.
