One cause of premature points burning up is a weak or poor grounded (is it screwed down tight) or incorrect sized condensor or else the points gap may be incorrect. Id check the gap and try a new condensor n see what happens. The sparks also weaker if the condensor is weak.

Another cause is excess current like when you use a 6 volt coil on a 12 volt tractor and dont have the correct sized voltage dropping (12 to 6) current reducing external ballast resistor.

The ignition resistor on the 706 is in the wiring harness between the switch and the solenoid. If the wiring harness has been replaced or repaired it is quite possible that this wire has been replaced with a regular copper wire. If that is the case you will need to add a resistor to the circut. Check the voltage at the battery side of the coil with the engine running. It should be about 6 to 7 volts. If you do not have a resistor in the circut you will see 12.5 to 14.5 volts.
