Hi, I used the tractor one day, pulled into the shed and shut it off. Next day I started it up and noticed a tick, tick, tick sound which turned out to be a valve lifter noise. (one valve lifter) I"ve went thru the adjustment procedure several times and it"s getting frustrating. I can"t get them to be quiet as I think they should be, or as they were before. I set the #1 cyl to TDC and ensure the distributor is pointing to the #1 cyl. then I went thru the adjustment by the book, adjusting six valve clearances to .027 in. Then set #6 cyl to TDC and verify the distributor again, then set the other six valve clearances. I done this so many times I can do it blind folded now, but I"m not doing something correctly. Maybe you can help? After adjusting the valves setting to .027 in. the tapping moves around from one valve to another. I get six set correctly and one of the other six is noisey. The tips on the rocker arms which come down on the valve are worn uneven and that makes it difficult to set it correctly. I"m wondering if there are any tricks to the trade I need to know about? Should I attempt to set the valves closer maybe like .025 rather than .027 in. or maybe slightly looser like .028 in? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Like bob said what your experancing is what is called Bridgen as the end of the rocker arm is woren off to one side and you are maken things worse , Put you glasses on and study each valve end and the tip of the rocker and only place the tip of tip of the feeler gauge in between . myself i have a small feeler gauge that i use , Or ya can pull the whole rocker arm assy. and send it to a machine shop and have the rockerarms reground to profile..

Tractor vet, thanks for the input. I want to make sure I got it correct. Are you saying to place the feeler gauage tip just between the highest point on the valve and the least worn or longest part of the rocker tip? That's one thing I have not tried.

Put the gauge on the worn part. That is where it will be when running. If you get it on the high spot they will be noisy. I set the valves with each piston on tdc. Runnlng mates are 1&6 , 2&5, 3&4. When you are setting #1, #6 will be between ex & in. Then turn it enough so #2 is between ex & in and set #5. Do this with all in the firing order which is 1 5 3 6 2 4. I would pull the rockers and clean up the tips on my valve grinding machine.

If the tips on the rockers are worn, making setting with a feeler gauge inaccurate, you can use a dial indicator to measure the actual lash.

Bob, Thanks for the information. If I would try the dial indicator, where should I mount it? I'm asumming that zero would be with the gap closed and then adjust it to the proper gap and lock it down. ??

It really doesn't matter how you have the pointer on the dial indicator set, as long as the two readings differ by the valve gap "spec".
