Thank you for all the pointers. Those of you that said to check for 'carb plugged/fuel flow' were right on. Rust particles had made their way to the carb because the fuel was being sloshed around the tank for the first time in who knows how long. Disassembled carb, soaked each half in a gallon of carb cleaner and followed up with a can of carb spray and a new gasket set. Added magnets to the sediment bowl, added a big fuel filter after the sediment bowl, and put a magnet on a wire in the fuel tank.
Any favorite ways to clean rust out of a gas tank? I've heard some of the sealers cause more problems than they solve but I have no hard data on that one.
This is an old topic so you will only be reading this if you are in Modern View???

I would think the easiest way to clean rust out of the inside of a tank is to use reverse electrolysis.

Suspend a piece of flat stock or rebar into the tank through the filler hole, fill with electroyte of your choice, hook up the charger and let her go.

Good choice, There are many posts on this forum, and on the site from other colors, on the process. Still would need a coating to limit further issues. JimN

Georgky is on the track. There are ways to make the shaking he suggests easier, including getting the neighbor kids to do it for sport and 15$. Another is to use ratchet straps and packing blankets to strap it to the wheel of a different tractor (flat so the bottom is down when starting) and put in the nuts, or clean gravel. (about a shovel full) then drive slowly for 15 minutes. Others have them boiled out at a radiator shop, but that can be harder on paint. If yours has the inner baffle tube, the best is to get it cleaned by others, then coated to resist additional corrosion. JimN

I am reading it on the old forum. I remove the tank and throw in a couple hand fulls of nuts and bolts, then shake the daylights out of it as long as you can then clean it out and do it another time or two. It will knock most of the stuff that can be loosened and works fairly well.
