I am looking into putting an engine into my 460 because it blew up. I have a 310 german diesel available out of a 715. Does it have the same bolt pattern as the other six cylinder IH engines? Also how do you tell the difference between a 301 and a 310 diesel by looking?

I have done the swap from a gas 756 to a germam 310 that was from a 715 combine, You will need the flywheel, rear mounting plates and front motor mounts for the tractor to this engine. Also the Oil Filter/Cooler from the combine interferes with with tractor side rails you need the tractor filter bracket, the combine oil pan is flat bottom with the oil pump at the front inside the pan, This flat bottom oil pan interferes with the front axle braket on a wide front end unless your swaping into a narrow front end tractor. The tractor oil pump is on mounted on the right front side of the engine. Also the rad outlet from a gas to the german diesel is on the wrong side. I also had to shorten the gas side rail by 1-1/2" so the hood would not be to short. And I rework the ail filter housing so would fit under the hood and be servisable thru the existing hood opening.

When we did this swap the Wrecking yard made us a deal on the Parts before we started. And the engines been in the tractor close to 10/11 years now. But it was a big winter project. We were glad to get away from that pig of gas engine and to a German diesel much better on fuel and a lot more power. One other thing we had going for us was we have had a 826 with the d358 german diesel since 1975. And always like this unit. So we had a good pattern to go by. Since the d310 and d358 germans are the same block and the 826/756 are basicly the same tractor frame. Good luck on what ever you do. Chris in Ontario Canada

The 301 and 310 are totally different designs. 301 looks identical to the 236/282 in the 460/560. You'll see the injectors/prechambers with glow plugs on the right side of the head. It'll have a Roosa-Master pump. 310 will have direct injection and a Robert Bosch pump located on the left side of the engine. Now, there are some major issues involved with putting a 310 from a combine into a tractor. It has something to do with the tractor flywheel not bolting up to the crankshaft or somthing like that. You'd need a flywheel, rear engine plate, and front engine mounts from a Farmall 544 diesel or a late 686 diesel to even get this project started. I think you'd be better off finding a gas engine or a 236, 282, or 301, those are as close to a bolt-in as you can get.

Hi, I don't know the bolt patterns, but am familiar with both engines. The 301 will have a roosa-master pump and cannister fuel filters on the right side, with a verticle oil filter center left. The 310 will have a german bosch pump with spin on fuel filters on the left, and a horizontal oil filter on the right. Good luck, Chuck
