I have been doing other things along w/changing oil in my Farmall 340 that I started around noon. Well, late this p.m. I tipped the first quart of oil into the reservoir and what made me look down and begin seeing a stream of oil go across the cardboard - luckily I had that there - ??? Do I get a nice award for being the first to do this dumb thing...I didn't think so. Hope you folks have enjoyed your day also, as I have.

Last night and again now I checked this post and am still ROARING w/laughter-tears in my eyes. You folks are great, stories also. Coffee - many months back I related about not turning coffee maker on or not pouring water in reservoir, done both and Allan in NE chimed back something like '...happens all the time here' And you folks thought being Norwegian wasn't contagious!

heard of a guy that had a new 1086. the first time he changed oil in it was during the summer. he took out the drain plug, and while it was draining he wondered how much oil it took. he got in the cab and started to look in the operators manual. it was hot so he started it up and turned on the ac while he read the book. the engine finally locked up. can you imagine how he felt.

Back when I had my own body shop, I rebuilt a Chevy 4X4 pickup that had been upside down. The box survived quite well, but we took it off to work on the cab. After we had set the box back on, and the pickup was basically back together, I decided to run it down the road. (My shop was on the edge of town, with open road to one side.)

The pickup had a 6.2 diesel, and kicked down on it pretty good because I didn't think it would be too lively. When I thought I was going about 45 or 50, I glanced at the speedo and saw I was going 70. Then it dawned on me; the dang box wasn't bolted down! I hit the brakes, turned around, and went back to the shop. I then found out that when I hit the brakes, the box slid forward and dented the back of the cab.

I'm sure I've done dumber stuff, but that came to mind. That's been 20 years ago and my brother-in-law, who was on the scene, still hasn't let me forget it.

Al L. You get the award for creating the longest respondent thread I've seen lately. Maybe ever? just to show we're all human??? think of those who won't admit it. BUT, I've never left a drain plug out. Made up for it in other ways though. Congrats. David.

Tom: I've done that one, left the top drawer of 4 open, coffee went into first drawer, which in turn directed it through the rest. Two top drawers were kitchen utensils, then dish towels and finally napkins, etc. The Mrs. was not impressed with me.

Years ago I gave my daughter a car I was through with. I told her that it uses some oil and to be sure to keep it topped up. A week or so later she came by to have me look at something on the car and I asked her if she was keeping the oil level up. She said yes and I asked how much she was having to add. She pulled a gallon jug out of the back and said "Two of these" I guess I had forgotten to tell her about dipsticks and she had filled it up to the top of the valve cover. I drained about 9 quarts out of the pan and luckily no damage was done. We still laugh about it.

Karl: I loaned my Super A to a neighbor for some yard work, showed him how to check the oil level. When I got home that evening my wife informed me the tractor required 3 quarts of oil, or so the neighbor had declared. He gave her quite a lecture on how I should look after my tractor better, and not be running that little engine with one quart of oil.

I had my dinner then went to investigate. Set a pail under the petcocks, and drained off 3 quarts of oil. Neighbor could see me out at the tractor, decided the passed on lecture by my wife may not have had enough impact. Over he comes, and tore into me quite viciously about loaning him the tractor so low in oil. I let him go on, finally I said,"Are you done?", then pointed out to him the pail of oil I drained off.

Then he tore into me about what a poor system IH used for checking oil, quite a lecture in itself. Finally I said to him, amazing how IH got to be such a popular tractor, good that they didn't sell a lot of them to folks that didn't know how to open a tap. Needless to say, he never came back wanting to borrow a tractor. By the way he did own another brand tractor about the same size, that wouldn't pull his disk.

I don"t ever remember leaving a drain plug out BUT was changing oil for a bubby once. This was back when oil came in steel cans. YEP! I dropped the churchkey into the oil filler hole. As luck would have it we fished it out with a magnet on a string. Whew! David.

I have only done the drain plug thing one time before, but I am sure it will happen again down the road. The one I still chuckle about that I did was leaving the oil pressure switch out on my 1966 Olds 442 I was restoring. The engine had just gone back in and everything under the hood was detailed as new, but I didn't have the hood put on yet. Dummy me can't wait to hear that new motor roar to life so I hit the key and sprayed oil all over everything under the hood and clear back to the trunklid and dripped off the rear bumper. The switch is right up front and on top next to the fan so the oil shot up and the fan blew it back. now that was a mess and the car was leaving later that week for the paint shop! I shut it off as fast as I could, but it still lost 3 quarts. When I think about it now I remember one of Dads favorite sayings about "The sh$t hits the fan" and just crack up laughing.

Pat: I stand by what your saying, we've certainly had our share of fine young lads on here. Some of them have been here long enough we no longer refer to them as young lads.

We've also had our share of ding-a-lings all ages, and your right, krusty old Mike should clarify that. Bear in mind krusty old Mike is only 3 years younger than I, and that puts him at 62.

Leaving the oil pan plug out is just about as bad or worse then forgetting to put the rotor back on and then wonder why the engine doesn't start. I think all of use have BTDT or something like that

No Al your not the first and wont be the last. Been doing oil changes for 34 years and still double check after pouring in the first quart. Jiffy lube almost could not get liability insurance not long after they started up in business, left too many oil plugs loose that came out and fried engines. The award goes to Lanse the self proclaimed great mechanic who is so good his daddy paid to have his oil changed and the little wisenheimer just watches as his daddy"s money (oil) is poured all over the floor and he just SMILES. Great job lanse....grow up you little twit

Al: Are you saying you poured in a quart of oil with drain plug out. Your not the first guy that ever did that. We wont mention any names.

Going back to that outhouse photo, few weeks back made me think of this little story. A young lad had been overseas WW#2. While in Europe he got acquainted with indoor plumbing. Upon his arrival home he suggesed to his dad, they install a bathroom. Got everything hooked up and working, so the young lad went to his kit bag, and very quickly thereafter his dad saw him going with a hand grenade. Dad went after him, too late he had thrown the grenade at the outhouse.

Dad went over to his son, and said, "Son your grandfather was in the outhouse." Down they went to learn the fate of grandpa. To their amazment the old man was crawling out of the debris. He got to his feet and declared, "I'm sure glad I didn't let that one go in your new fangled indoor outhouse."

When my dad "hired" someone to change the oil in my holland, for some reason. Anyway, the "mechanic" poured a gallon or oil right through the tractor and on to the floor. I was on the other side of the garage smiling, and it took him a minuite to realise what was going on....

Lanse: I've noticed from some of your earlier, rather stiffly worded replies to others on this forum, you seem to know an awful lot - a precocious 14-year old(?) without a doubt. I find it interesting that with all your knowledge, you weren't doing the oil change yourself. And, if you were smiling during the spillage, you were obviously aware of what was happening; I wonder why didn't you say something, or do something helpful? I'm sure many of us here on the forum find this peculiar, and impossible not to compare to what most any other kind-spirited person would do in the same situation. mike

I am 14. I love old tractors, and I am always studing them online. I only fell in love with them. I work on my garden tractors. I have been growing corn and working my fingers to the bone to get a Farmall H soon here.

As for why I wasnt changing the oil, that tractor is a present from my dad, and he wouldnt buy a $1000 used one so spent 13 times that much. He was afraid Id screw it up so he had the dealer come out here and show me how to do it. Well, the guy spent 20mins looking for the transmission dipstick before I suggested I go get the manuel, he poured a gallon of oil all over the floor, and swollowed a squirt of diesal well bleeding the engine after replacing the fuel filter.....

I am always happy to help someone.

I also raise sheep and chickens, and grow sweet corn to sell ( I did about 3 acres this year), I play guitar, and am proud to be a vegitarian and member of PETA. I do all this well my moms at work..... (my dad is a few hundred miles from here

I have never understood that vegetarian thing. I love my veggies, but beef, pork, chicken, frog legs, turkey, rabbits and scores of other things really add to there appeal. I think most veggy folks are under the assumption that there is something cruel about killing and eating animals. They were put here for the benefit of man. No more cruel than digging up an innocent potato. I have even eaten horse, coon, grounhog, deer, bear, buffalo, rattlesnake, alligator, and just about anything I can catch. I guess I am a prime canidate for P.E.T.A
