Rob:

Looks like you bought it from Larry Jones at Mt. Olivet, KY. I recognize his little field. I have bought three from him.

Don't mean to scare you, but they were not quite as described, but fairly close - sort of. Don't be surprised if yours needs more than you were told. Example, the last one I bought, he said "This is nicest super A I've seen in a long time". I spoke with him and he said it needed NOTHING. Well, first, I started with having to buy $210 worth of new rear rims, plus mounting fees, as the ones on it were rusted through. (I had specifically asked him about the rims.) And, the "perfect sheet metal except for one small dent" is not-so-perfect. Maybe he had inspected it at midnight without a flash light. It is a good above average super A, just not quite as pristine as described.

The other two - which I purchased earlier and together - did not even come nearly as close to measuring up to his descriptions. (When buying the last one, I thought I knew more about what questions to ask from the experience of buying the first two from him.)

His buddy, Dean Hinton, does most of Larry's hauling. Dean brought the first two I bought together, to Florida. Dean sells the little farmalls also. Now, I have never seen anyone describe a farmall any more accurately and honestly than Dean.

I might buy from Larry again, but not without seeing the tractor in person before purchasing it.

mike

Mike, I thought that when I looked at the picture it may have been at Larry's place. I live about 50 miles south of him. I also know Dean from Carlisle and they are both tractor traders. Not saying either is a crook or cheat, but they are salesman. I don't know how they find so many of the offsets, of course Ky is full of them, but I haven't been able to buy anything from either one of them. Don't know Larry very well. I have known of Deans business for a while and he does seem to tell everything he knows to be wrong. I am not sure he was in on it, but a guy I know here that deals with him bought 12 Super C's from a tobacco seed producer in Winchester(Rickards Seed Co) for 350 dollars a piece. Some had cultivators and some did not. I sure wish I had known they were for sale as I had operated a few of those tractors when I was a kid and worked for them for a while. My great grandpa worked for them for several years in the 40 and 50s.

George: How are you? Yes, like you, I'm not saying anyone is a crook or a cheat; I'm just saying I differed in opinion with Larry's descriptions - three times - and I think my descriptions were more accurate. Larry's descriptions cost me $ I did not anticipate spending. Bear in mind, I'm not naive about old tractors; I expected to have to do some things and spend some money, but not to the extent I did, based on the descriptions with which I was provided.
12 Super C's! Wow. You should write a book of your farmall experiences. It would be great reading. Take care. mike durhan

Mike, I am hot as a firecracker and getting hotter. Seems I never hear of any bargains like those Super C's until after the fact. The old boy that bought them is fixing them up and selling them to folks in Wisconsin and Michigan. He has drove the price of most all SC implements out of sight around here. I use to pick up plows, mowers, disk and all kinds of things for 10 to 25 dollars. Now a set of those FH disc are bringing 4 to 500 bucks sometimes. Plows are also high and planters are really high. I still find a bargain every once in a while, but not like before.

George, I used to buy those old C and Super C tractors and put the engines in Super As once in awhile. Now I just fix the old engines...they are off the charts for some reason.
You get that 450 going yet?

Hi Bill. No I haven't worked on the 450 any yet. It is way down on the list. It is to hot now to work on anything. Been busy canning veggies and topping tobacco. I leave here before daylight and top until I get hot, then quit. I like 2 acres having it all topped. All these farms being split into 5,10 and 15 acre tracts has drove the price up. I also think this computer and all the tractor shows are driving up prices some as well. I will try to put a pic or two of my tobacco crop in tractor photo's. I took one or two from the seat of the 666 so I may get by with it. In spite of El Toro's tutoring I still can't get pics on the forum.

I grew up just up the road from you in Southern Indiana...know all about topping and suckering tobacco. I think you guys use spray on the suckers now. Didn't think much of pulling plants and riding a setter all day either.
Used to drive my brother nuts. I was the youngest so they always put me in the top tier in the barn...thought they could catch me if I fell. I useed to drop tobacco worms down his collar and watch him jump. The barn was 12 tiers high...fat chance of catching me. Later on I liked it because I did not have to handle every stick and eat so much dirt.. Good old days. Homework and tobacco stripping.
I have not touched my 450 either...like you said...too darn hot down here.
Be well
Bill

Rob: Nice looking little tractor, I presume it run as well as it looks. I'd remove those wheel weights for mowing.

Hugh I thought that mine did not need wheel weights for mowing but one trip down ditch bank made me change my mind.

NDS: I think I run my Super A on wider wheel tread than most folks. I'm on 52" centers, and that makes a big difference over 44" or 48". I've tried them at 48", no thanks.

All the years I used the Super A and 130 around the dairy farm I had them on 60". I liked that raking hay, also had tool bar cultivators that would run 4 - 30" rows. I guess what go me started on 60" was the IH semi mounted 7' sickle mower. We found it took 60" tread to give good stability with that mower.

Mine is on narrowest setting whatever that is and I am sure it makes big differnce in stability when they are widened out.

NDS: They will go down to 40" with 9.2x24 tires on 8" rims. I'm quite certain the 11.2x24 on 10" rims wouldn't. I have 12.4x24 on 11" rims on my 130 and 140, I know those will only go down to 44" centers.

Is this a restoration project or a tractor to use? Sure would make it pretty with a new paint job. Nice straight metal already.

Im good at thinking of projects for other people. lol
