What are the physical differences between 460 and 560? Size, weight, axles? Would any 6 cyl IH gas motor fit in either one?

Rear end on the 460 is about the same as a 300 and the 560 differential is about the same as 400- 450. The 560 is a lot heavier tractor than the 460. The 460 came of the H line and the 560 came from the M line.

An uncle who had farmed 200+ acres from the 1940s-on with an H and an M, bought a 460 to add to the herd in the mid-60s. Didn't keep it long, swapped it for a 560 gasser WFE and was a happy ol' boy for the rest of his career.

Fairly subjective appraisal on his part, but he thought that 460 gasser was the most worthless tractor ever to wear red and white. Fergit if the 460 had TA, know the 560 did.

I have to agree with your uncle, the 460 gas was a nice handy tractor, it just wouldn't pull a load.

I learned to agree with him at a tender age. Saved me lots of tender spots on my head and backside. ;o)

Know it broke his heart the day he sold that 560, but after he sold his dairy herd and "retired", didn't really need it anymore. He monkeyed around raising/selling holstein heifers until well into his 70s, went back to farming with his H and M.

Cousin did all of his dad's baling with his 656D after the 560 went, still does on the same place.

They both came from factory with IH gas or diesel 6 cylinder engines.

Not concerned with what came from the factory. Want to know what can be done.

You can drop a gas 301 out of a 806 or 715 combine in either a 460 or 560

Are the axles and rear end the same. Does the 560 weigh more? Physically bigger in any way than the 460?

Compare the size difference of an H/SH/300/350 and M/SM/SMTA/400/450, relate that to the difference between a 460 and 560. In simplified terms a 460 is a 6 cylinder 350, a 560 is a 6 cylinder 450. Unlike the H and M blocks, the 460/560 blocks are the same and differ mainly in bore and stroke, not physical size like the H and M engines.

I don't have all that memorized like you do, although I do have the engine service manual, I was too lazy to look it up. Should have said bore and/or stroke.

The heavyduty axles in the 460 are the same as a 560, 460 weight is less
