I had to split the 52 super C to replace the starter ring gear and after reassembly I must have lost the prime on the pump. How do you get it to suck oil? It seems like it gets a little oil then quits.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe, I am sure you are getting the idea now. I just let mine sit with the front end over a slight hill and leave the fill plug out for a while. Then start the tractor and work the touch control levers back and forth a while . it should pick up. Leave that fill plug out while doing this as that is how air is purged from the system. It will work again.

Our new hydraullic pumps come in with petroleum jelly inside of them. Dunno if that works or not for a prime but probably worth a try.

Kevin: That works fine for a new pump or if you've had the pump apart. No question if the gears of that pump are packed with petroleum jelly, it will stay there will installing pump and lines and be very effective in pulling oil along.

For the guy that has split his tractor, hardly worth taking the pump apart just to add the jelly. Most times when you split the tractor a combination of oil left in pump, oil still in lines, clean screen in touch control and a full reservoir, the pump will self prime very quickly. The full reservoir makes a huge difference, you only have to jack the left rear wheel about 4" and oil will run to pump via graviety, if the air can get out. Fill the system with oil, jack the rear wheel and go to dinner, oil will bypass the air while you dine.

Some of the pumps have a removable plug and when i see that i will remove and fill with fluid before starting.

Joe: A hydraulic pump should prime on it's own, very much as Red said. The design on those hydraulic lines to the touch control unit can take a bit of time to fill and the reservoir has to be full. Parking the tractor with front end about 1' lower than rear can help. Also, loosen hydraulic lines at the pump until oil pushes the air through.

Another item that could be impedeing oil flow is the screen in the touch control unit. Oil flowing to pump must go through that screen, thus the screen must be clean. I always clean that screen if I have a tractor split. It should be done yearly anyhow. Very likely when you had those lines off, you lost all oil in them, now oil must flow to pump by graviety, and anything you can do to enhance that graviety will help.

I have never had to prime mine, it does it all by its self. I usually fill the tank and let it sit for a while to fill the lines and then when I start it up, Presto, it works.
