Resolved my daughters recently acquired A's fuel problem from last week's posting (sticking fuel needle) and now have one more challenge- I hope. Much of the grass clippings from the mower escape to the front of the deck and fill the radiator. Blades spin clockwise and are installed correctly. There are no baffles in the deck and it has a side discharge opening that maybe half of the clippings make it to. Feller that previously owned this tractor built the belly mower himself. Wonder if the belt pulleys are too small(spin too fast) or he has the wrong type of blades?

Dont know about belly mowers but on a (at least some) rideing mower in the front part of the deck is what is called a "vortex baffle" that keeps the grass clippings from excapeing out the front of the deck and directs them to the side. Sometimes these get worn from rubbing the ground and have to be replaced.

Mow in reverse - hmmm..... the tractor belongs to my daughter, she is a blond so her response would be that she wants the grass shorter not taller. (If she should read this I'm dead meat.)

Park on level cement area then look under the mower with engine off turn a blade so it points straight forward. Then measure distance from cutting edge to floor. then measure back of blade. Front should belower than back.

The the front edge of the shroud (the part dragging into the grass as the unit moves into unmowed lawn) should be about 1/2 inch below the cutting edge. this keeps material from spitting out, as well as providing a better air flow out the discharge. If the blades are flat, replacing them with blades that have a flip up at the rear edge will also help air flow. If the homemade deck is all square material, I would weld in some 1/8" sheet to make the primary blade zone fit the blades. The front should be about 1/4th inch lower than the back. JimN
