My wife is getting pretty fed up having to go through two sets of gates to get from the road to our house. I can't say I blame her one bit as it is a pain. I built one cattle guard out of 4" pipe but the sheep just trotted across it and the cows jumped over it although I thought 5 feet would be wide enough. I have looked on the internet but cannot find any foolproof specification for width, spacing, size of pipe etc. Do any of you guys have any experience with what works?
Thanks for your help. Karl

If it snows, make sure you have an electric fence to prevent the cows hurting them selfs when they cant see the guards.

Wont they break their legs if you get too carried away with the pit portion? Nobody runs them in Wisconsin so I am not one to talk, but I have seen cattle break themselves on more than one occasion. This seems like it is a way to lose a good cow in a hurry. (the bad ones never get hurt)

8 ft is more common, paint the pipes flat black with a thin stripe on the top in contrasting color. There are even hurds of cattle that respond to "painted on" guards No actual guard, just paint. Put in one guard that works and get them convinced. JimN

Look into the electric gates. Mules. Just like your garage door openers.

Don't know the site addy but theres a standard for cattle at the cattle mans asso. I know they say 8 foot wide and I think its 12 plus inches deep. I built one years ago and still have it here, never installed it but it meats specs for them.

Painting it bright yellow will help also.

My company builds and installs cattle guards in gas well lease roads. They are built 8'wide with 2,3 or 4" pipe with no less than 3" between pipes. Works well, but there are still some cows that could jump over the moon occasionally.

Are you digging the pit under it?

I'd go a little bigger; say 7X10 and a good 18" deep on the pit.
