Farmall B ignition switch

I am plugging away on the alternator. I have the parts, have removed the plug and rewired and reconnected the plug to post wire. Still need to add the other wire that runs to the ignition switch with the diode. I did switch that misconnected wire that was on the ammeter so that it was on the alternator side of the gauge. Still no static discharge regardless of what position the switch is in. Which brings me to the topic of switches. I still have the house light switch wired onto the tractor and was wondering if it is possible to rebuild the original switch or do I have to buy a new one? Mine has one of the posts broken off at the bottom. I could probably repair it if I could get inside the switch. Only obvious way in is through the bottom but I don't know if the plastic insulating disc on the bottom of the switch will come off or not. Anyone ever rebuild one? New ones are $55 if I understand the catalog and used are available on e-bay. The type of switch I have looks like the one for sale on ebay #300137752317. Just wondering if mine is fixable or should I jump into the bidding? Thanks!

Thheree are several places to get used good switches. Ebay is crazy. Try Seelwheelranch.com. He has them for 20$ I believe. Also Marshalls has a good replacement for 11$. They have an Ebay Store or call them at 18888240544. I have one of tthese as a temp replacement until I finish the tractor.

Spend the $55 for a new one, or substitute a good toggle switch. I'm just a bit leary of the used switches on ebay. I do not buy used electrical parts unless I know for sure that it can be taken apart and rebuilt.

I am with you all the way. Just hard to justify a switch that will end up being 5% of the end value of the tractor. Course if I was in it for the money I wouldn't have replaced the Monroe seat with original and bought a second one for a buddy seat, picked up shutters even though it doesn't run on distillate, new manual, a rear light bracket (Even though I have no lights) and tons of miscellaneous stuff! Best bet for less aggravation is a new switch so I guess I will take the advice. Clearly with me money is no object. :-)

Case/IH has a switch for about $15 that will fit and work fine. The subscitute switch is made different and has black plastic knob but original metal knob will fit it. I asked for switch for M and this is what they brought out it was in Case/IH box and looks to be good quality do not know part number though.

That's a welcome bit of news my friend, I will check it out. Have to go over there anyhow to get some manuals ordered for the tractor I am playing with after I do the 2N which is on deck to be done after the B. Thanks!

Dave, I'd take my hat off to anybody that could get that switch apart at the bottom and then back together and working. The body of it looks like potmetal but doesn't seem as brittle.

If you don't have the remnant of the broken-off terminal to solder back in place, you could try fabbing up something that you could solder, or perhaps screw, to what's left of the terminal on the bottom of the switch. If you are able to screw it on, I'd throw a touch of solder on that joint. Any soldering you do, keep the switch button down, to keep your soldering heat from flowing all through the guts of the switch. Worst you would do is give the coup de grace to a switch that's already borderline.

I'm sure the household light switch is kinda bulky, gommy and looks out of place. If you really don't want to spring for the replacement, you could make a lot neater looking job with a simple toggle switch to mount on the bracket in place of the old one that would be a lot more discreet.

Well I have nothing to lose by trying to fix it, I guess, but for now I will try a different alternative. I have the alternator wiring mostly done but it is dinner time so taking a break. Have to splice in the diode and hook her to the ammeter. Gonna be a bummer if this doesn't work AND I have a gut hunch that she will still run rough and stall a lot. I still think the distributor has "issues" and if it isn't there then maybe a (gulp!) carburetor problem needs to be considered (?). I've got two more tractors waiting in the wings, it would sure be a boost to my morale if I could get this one squared around!

Scary as it might seem friend, electrics are pretty cut and dried. The carb will require developing a feel.

But nothin' you can't handle.

Hang in there!
