I ran across a decent old M, but it spits 5th gear out when you let out the clutch. I had heard that the rail sometimes gets bent and you can straighten it by removing the pulley assemble and sticking a pry bar on the rail to straighten it.

My educated guess would be wore out bearings on the trans input shaft and possibly on the roller pilot bearing on the sliding shaft. If those all are worn out, they will let the shaft wobble and then it will spit the gear off. 5th gear is direct drive from the input shaft and the 4th gear has the teeth for 5th in the front center right next to the splines on the sliding shaft. if it gets off center it will tend to push the gear off. If something is bent in there, REPLACE IT! It will take a huge bar and a portapowerto put enough force on it to bend a shaft back and then it will still be off and also damage the other bearings holding it. The front trans shaft bearings can be reached through the belly pump opening and you may not have to remove the top plate.

It could be as simple as the breaks dragging on the drum due to a frozen pivot pin. Mine wouldn"t do anything in fifth just to find that the right break was sticking. Once that I cleaned it up and freed the bushing just like new.....well maybe not that new.

I think fifth is not a 'gear' but a direct coupling of the top shaft of the transmission. If the bearings are worn allowing the shaft to move it will cause it to pop out. If it has been doing this a lot the couplings may be worn.

I wish I knew if it would be that easy as well... My M will drop out of gear if you are going up a grade and then the load is off (if you reach the top of a hill for instance)

I havent pulled off the top cover due to the amount of labor involved, but more because I dont know what I would be looking at to fix once I got it open. Its not a big deal for me now since I dont use that gear much, but its just something that will bother me since its not right. I think there is some information in the archives about how to fix it.

Would be nice if it were that simple to fix, but I doubt it. From what most of the fellows have said on here over the last couple of years concerning that problem, you are going to most likely need a new gear - or at least a different (better) 5th gear. mike durhan

you should remove the top plate and have a peek inside.
