Sleeve mystery

I have a 291 engine I am going to overhaul. The pistons are a 395365R1 and according to the IH dealer they were a standard bore piston for a 291 (3 3/4?).

THe next issue is the sleeves. I had the block getting cleaned and the sleeves pulled. I got a call from the guy saying the block appears to have been bored out to accept a larger sleeve (outside diameter).

THe old sleeve measures 3.94" and my overhaul kit measures 3.875" and there is no PN on the old sleeves.

Any ideas? Scrap the current block and start over? I am checking if he can source sleeves that will fit the bored size, but I'm trying to work on a budget too.

Any ideas on running it sleeveless to a 4.0" bore and what pistons would be available?

Check the #'s on the left side of the block near the oil filter base and make sure that it is indeed a 291 and not a 263up dated to a 291 and if this is the case then you will need the sleeves for the 263 to 291 as the flange widthe is larger on the 263 block and then they bore the block to take the wide flange sleeve to fill the gap . Pistons are the same but the sleeve is wider at the flange on this update. . Also it may have been a replacement block that was a 263 to start with if you find no #'s on the left side of the block.

If the block was originally 291, and the block was bored to 3.875, then boring it additionally may find either water, or reduced strength. LA Sleeve will have in stock, or make from stock the sleeves to fit the bore you have. (effectively replacing the existing sleeves. If you want bigger, they can supplu sleves that fit yopur block and bigger pistons. Google LA Sleeve. JimN

Is there C in front of the 291 and any other #'s ???? as it may have been stamped like i do when i make the change as it may have been a replacement block and the mechanic or machine shop stamped it . Myself i use my stamps and behind the C263 it will look like this C263-291 , now not sayen that is what was done but that is the only thing i can come up with for ya.
