Generator on 1951 C Farmall

I am rewiring a !951 C farmall. The wiring was gone. I have directions but it says to wire the Generator armature to the The volatage regulator armature terminal. and the field side of the generator to the field terminal on the VR. How do you determine the Armature side and field side of the generator. The generator is the original 6 volt generator. I have a new VR so the terminals are labeled.

Greg, Heres a couple ways to tell which post is which if they arent labeled ARM and FLD as some are:

1) If the Gennys connection posts are different sizes, the larger is the Armature and the smaller is the Field.

2) If you remove any wires/leads to either post and use a decent ohm meter on the R x 1 scale, attach one lead to a clean metal portion of the case/frame, and whichever genny post has the most resistance to case is the Field and the other one the Armature. The resistance on the Field post (maybe 4 to 7 ohms vicinity) should be 3 to 6 ohms more then the Armature post to case/frame cuz it has the added resistance of the Field windings in series with the armature which leads to case/frame via the grounded brush.

Polarize the genny before you start her up.

The armature post should be the one furthest away from the crankcase. Al lot of them have an "A" (it might look like an inverted "V") stamped next to them. The post closer to the crankcase will be the field.

To polarize (assuming you have a four-post regulator that mounts below the generator) get a jumper wire. Clip one end to the BAT termial on your regulator. Turn your ignition on, leave tractor off. All you have to do is touch the ither end of the jumper to the GEN termial on the regulator. It should give you a little spark. If it does, you're done.

Why would you turn the ign on? The bat terminal on the regulator is hot all the time.

Also, someone told me I would have to polarize the generator. If this is true how do you do that.
