i'm trying to buy a International 460 Utility from my grandpa. hes givine me a hard time. i just found a D-17(1958 series 1?) for sale for almost $2000 cheaper than what my grandpas wants for the 460. what should i do. both have loaders, the 17 comes with a blade, disc, plow, culivator, and tries chains, and the 460 just a 3 point adapter? i know more about the 460, and alosmt nothing about a D-17, where should i go? i also posted this in the AC department to hear "both sides" of the story. so with that, PLEASE HELP!!

Duane,

My Dad (from Antigo) saw it in the Sate Farmer said it had my exchange on the phone number. I'd been looking for 656 U at the time. I called the number (turns out he was 2 miles away as the crow flies), went and looked at it and offerd $2800 (asking $3200.) He said he would think about and call me back, 3 days later I bought it. few minor things wrong with it but it purrs like a kitten. Hyd pump may need a little work. Not strong but functional.

I hope to paint her up for RPRU in Madison.

Where are you from?

Butch

Butch, The 460 utility I looked at was in Brandon, WI. I live in Rosendale.

I am an IH guy , but I would go for the D17.
$5000 for a 460 U is "NUTS". The D17 if it's a good one is a better tractor from the get go.
Dealing with family isn't all it's cracked up to be.

jk,

I just bought a 460 U gas this spring, Tach broken, fuel guage don't work, lights work, new battery, 90% rubber all the way around, bent tie rod arms, fast hitch but slow to lift and lower (fast hitch check valve disconnected and internal parts seized up), Steered really hard but removed front spindles and cleaned and greased, now steers very easy. missing 1 460 Utility badge, one side panel over the engine, some of the sheet metal is a little dinged up. All for $2,800. It took the seller a weekend to decide to let it go for that. I saw another one here in South central WI advertised for $3,500 with a loader.

Butch, It is either an incredible coincidence or you just bought the same tractor I looked at about a year ago. The location (state) and things wrong you listed are exactly the same. Anyway I offered they guy $3,200 and he said no. I left him my phone number in case he changed his mind. A few weeks latter I bought a 504 instead and sure enough he called me back.

Wow for that kinda a price on both of them. That is very high around here. They must be restored for that price. Heck for the price he wants for the 460U i can buy 3010D's with loaders, 3pt. ect. around here for that.
I would hold off and find something eles a little more reasonable.

They both seem a high to me. I have seen several good D-17 series one sell for 1000 dollars. I don't know what the implements are worth as not many of them around here.

That must have been at an auction near the north pole on superbowl sunday. It certainly is not normal for a D-17 that will run at all to bring less than $2000.

No it was on a Tuesday at a big sale in London Ohio with 3 or 400 folks there. Tri-Green implement has a two day sale every month. I saw a decent D-17 diesel here sell a few years ago that only brought 780 dollars. I wish I had bid on it some, as it just needed tires and paint. Around here if isn't a Ford,MF,JD, it just doesn't sell very well. Some IH tractors sell OK, but not all.

The D-17 is a verynice tractor. Why would a reletive give you grief? The 460U is good, but not that much better at all. Reliability wise D-17s are great. 2000 less than a 3000 tractor is just 1000. JimN

I bleed red, but at the prices you are talking and the implements included, I would go with the D-17 if it is a decent tractor. They are good tractors. Sounds like it is the deal to take, and grandpa may think different in a while.
