I told you guys there was an H offered to me by a guy who wanted his heirloom to have a good home. Today I went up to see it in person, since I didn't have any pictures of it. It's a '44 H duel fuel 171344-X6 (low-speed gears)
third party image

It stopped running 6 years ago because some sealant he put in the tank had leaked into the gas lines and clogged them. He bought a new NOS tank, but hasn't installed it. It comes with the tractor. Also a new throttle body, the original govenor, heck he even has a pair of rear steel wheels he'll throw in if I want them. (Not sure if I should take them, as I don't plan on using them)

Here is what parts I know it needs:

To get it running:

- Fuel lines to hook up new tank

- 6v battery

- Tube for almost new left tire

- A duplicate good tire for the right side.

I'd like to swap the tricycle front end for a NF with the non-adjustable wheels. (I just favor the look of them)

There are additional parts I'll want to add over time to spruce it up. Then I can strip it and repaint it. But I don't need to do that in any hurry because this thing looks pretty darn good like it is!

Giving out the name of the ship your son is stationed aboard is fine. He should be proud of it, and you of him. What you shouldn't give out is specific deployment dates and locations... which you probably won't know anyway. You'll hear "We're heading out end of May and we'll be home some time in July" and "We'll be out in the Persian Gulf" and such. Those aren't specific at all. Besides, he'll tell you more about his port visits to far away places.

... or... He won't tell you much about them at all... if you know what I mean. hehehe third party image

Congratulations Mike. Hope the wife/offspring approve and join in on the tractor interest. I would add, take the wheels if he is offering them, someday you may want to sell them for $'s to use for repairs, additional parts, a outing to a tractor show w/wife and offspring. I don't think you would have to do a thing to that H, looks like above average work clothes on her now. Good luck!

If he's going to give you the tractor,do what I did.I had a Cub given to me by a relative.i wouldn't accept it unless he let me pay for it,so we settled on a price of $1,he wrote me a receipt for it and signed it.Thats a legal transaction.Any dispute, produce the slip with the mans signature on it WRITTEN by him.

I think you should go give the guy a couple hundred dollars anyway. I know some people think its smart to take advantage of the uninformed but you know what it is worth.

I don't see any oil leaks on that H, you may get by with a small bottle of hand cleaner, I buy it by the gallon jug.

Re a bill of sale. Just crank up the MSWord and type up a simple ' date, item (tractor) sold to ----- --- for ----- ---. Just make sure you pay him something, a dollar will do, for the contract law provision of 'consideration'. Names and addresses of buyer and seller. One copy for each of you Signatures at bottom. Don't toss those orignal caps on fuel and rad. Perhaps use newer for when you are running but save those originals for show. Save 35 dollars by patching that tube. Use tires as is until you have $ for new set. Matching up old tires is futile and money down the drain. Your local auto parts can sell you steel tubing and connections to make a like original line for a lot less than a repro braided. Maybe 8 bucks total. Everyone has a couple of tricycle front ends they don't need. I'd give you one. Don't spend$ for one, one will come your way for almost nada. BUT..start watching for wheels and rims. Looks like a little wet color sanding with 1200 and some machine polishing and you are parade ready.

Gordo

Mike, don't sell your low gears. Those kids of yours will want to pull that thing one of these days.

Mike in CA,

I am from Minnesota. I was impressed by your luck in finding a tractor and an owner that generous to give it to you! I have been looking for a set of low-speed gears for my H for a couple of years now. Would you consider selling them to me separately if you will not use them?

Marty from Minnesota

Hey,hey, hey. That is a good looking old H. The price is right, but I think like some others that a bill of sale is a good idea. Would hate to see you on Judge Judy in a few years. The engine is a fairly minor problem on one that good. I wish my 44 looked like that one. I would also like a set of those low gears. Makes my 600 dollar one look high. Congratulations

Hey Mike WAY TO GO! Looks like a SWEET tractor. GeneMO, is right. Get a bill of sale. I got one for the 100.00 Super C. I am glad I did, I don't want a issue down the road. Keep us informed on the progress. Ron

Some guys have all the luck! Looks like a real straight tractor. Are you sure he is OK with the just giving it away part? Should you get a bill of sale in case there are future questions 10 or 15 years down the road.

It looks like a great project. I have some parts that I dont need on my parts tractor. I'll keep watching your posts to see what you need.

Andrew reported to his ship this morning. Mayport in Florida. He really sounds excited.

Best of luck Gene

Bill of sale sounds like a smart idea. Any ideas (from anyone) on how to word it would be most appreciated. I want it to be strong, but I don't want the language to be abrasive. This is, afterall, a gift.

Gene, I was wondering a couple days ago how your sailor was doing. My younger brother was stationed at Mayport in the 80's. He was an engineer on the USS Saratoga. He traveled all around the world on that thing. He has pictures of the Sara going through the Suez canal and it was a tight fit. They were sent to the Mediteranean to relieve the USS Missouri and her battle group.

Andrew is on a guided missle frigate, not up with the new letter designations. I know what DD and DE were, they were probably the closest to the size of this one. It is 450 some odd feet long. I am kinda a new Navy dad so not sure if it is OK to give out the name of the ship. My wife gets on the Navy parents bulletin board all the time and about got in trouble for giving out to much info when Andrew was in Great Lakes. He sounds like a different person since he got away from his deadbeat, looser buddies at home.

Thanks for asking, Gene

Looks like a jewel to me. Best of luck with it. As I recall, you just need to give the owner a look at it when you"re done and maybe put it in a parade or show. You done good!

Finally got down here . Many happy returns with that beautiful piece of iron. Hang onto it. Take your time and work a little here and there. Set up an amount out of your budget and then get on with it.
