All was running fine, turned off tractor..had lunch and pulled starter switch out..pulled rod
Nothing.....click,click, The volt meter on the tractor jumbs a little to Neg side. I replaced the battery with a good 8 volt, 8 volt was on the tractor when I bought it 2 years ago and has run just fine untill yesterday. You folks have been a great help in the past and was hoping you could give some clues? I really appreciate it.

I know your wondering if I got her going.
Well, I want to thank you for your suggestions,
I started with the easy one first, and you know it worked :)
I put the tractor in 4th gear and rocked it back and forth heard a click and the fan started moving. She started right up. God bless you!

woohoo, i love it when it's simple. I can't tell you how many times I thought it was gonna be something disastrous on my tractor, but ended up being an easy (and better yet, cheap) fix....

Another "electric-start" saved from being a "drug around the barnlot on a chain and pop into gear-start"

I had a similar problem last year. Take off the push button switch on the starter. Although the brass/bronze contacts looked perfect, they formed an anodic film which prevented contact. My neighbor had me scrape them with a knife, and it solved the problem. He has had a JD B forever and says he has to this periodically. Suprising to me, as the contacts were spotless and I even tryed spraying them with electrical cleaner etc before scraping them.

not an expert on tractors or anything, but I had problems starting my JD B after a new battery, Turns out that I didn't pay attention to the fact that the battery is hooked up backwards to what I'm used to. I think that's called positive ground..

Sooooo, are you sure the battery is hooked up the right direction?

I replaced the battery in the same manner,
Positive went to starter and the ground to frame.
I wonder if somehow something reversed the polarity on the system?

With a volt system, ya I know you have an 8 volt battery but any how on a 6 volt system it should be + ground. The ground will not make any difference on how the start works but can as far as how the genny works or doesn't work

remove the starter as it is maybe locked up on the flywheel this can happen the ammeter is showing discharge because the dist is drawing juice when the sw is on or you can put the tranny in 4th and rock the tractor back and forth watch the fan if it moves a bunch the starter is unlocked and you mite hear a click when rocking the tractor this doesent always work and you mite have to remove and replace the starter.

Ceck all connections from the battery to the starter. If it has a soliniod you might tap on it a little some times that will make one work again. Also you can pull the start off and have it checked at your local auto parts tore. Most do that for free. It could also have locked up in the flywheel and if so takeing it loose then tighting it back down will fix that most of the time
