966 Repair Didn't Work

Well, that was a wasted effort! :>(

Hi-Lo shift linkage on the 966 sheared the roll pin, so I replaced it with a 1/4" bolt and double nutted.

Had a heck of a time "reaching" the detent; really had to play with it to get the old sow in gear; both directions.

Fought it long enough to finish the baling and the summer fallow ground then I tore the tractor back down to parade rest.

Went into town, searched high and low and finally found a 7mm bolt and the proper drill bit to ream 'er out and "oversize" it. Was all set to start drilling it out.

But first, and for some reason just on a "whim", I then tried a common, everyday 1/4" roll pin. Had to beat it in with a hammer and stout punch.

Darned tractor "acts" normal now and shifts just fine. Hope it lasts. :>(

Allan, sometimes you can put another roll pin inside of the first one, if it is one of the hollow ones. Stiffens them up and keeps from breaking the larger pin. Might be worth a shot.

Put a smaller pin inside the one you have already put in there. It not only makes it stronger but it will spread the first pin a little more to make it tighter in the holes. The problem with a bolt is they are not tight enough in the holes and will wear a little and then shear off.

Originally there was a tapered groove pin in that hole. Being tapered it was a press fit when installed. Unfortunately too often when those pins are removed the are either driven all the way through the holes and the holes get stretched or the pins get reused and they then do not fit tight enough to stay in.

That's what I was kinda wondering. Perhaps the original was one of those "wrapped" kind?

The hole on the inner shaft is tight enough; just seems like the roll pin doesn't have sufficient "shear-strength" to withstand all the shifting "abuse"?

I had just replaced this roll pin three years ago. Should have lasted longer than that.

A "Spirol" pin is the answer. Our IH dealer (now defunct) used to carry a wide variety of them, and use them in all sorts of applications.
