Hey guys, just picked up a Farmall 300, got her real cheap because she has a dead miss. here is what i know.
1, good spark. 2, what seem like good compression ( just stuck my finger in the hole and it blew it out pretty good) 3, after running the tractor for awhile with it missing All the plugs are dry 100%!!
4, readjusted valve lash, still no better.
5, previous owner said it would smooth out under load.
6, he was told that it was the valve guides.

what should i try next, intake gaskets?
any input would be GREAT
thanks Matt Compton.

I have a farmall h that does the same thing....I belive it is a weak spring(s) operating the valve. bottom line if a valve isent opening when it is supposed to it will miss. when under load there is diffrent pressure being applied to everthing. when things get sloppy they dont run like there supposed to. like for instince, going down a hill will make it miss worse or even back fire! well thats because there could be slop in the dist shaft. My M will miss when going down a big hill. I also had a 3 cylinder gas engine that ran crappy. i was going down a big hill and i put it in a lower gear and let the clutch out and it ran better after that, probally had a stuck valve or somthing that runs the valve. you can also break things this way too. oyu cant always see what it making them run bad. i look at it this way....i'm getting older and i don't run like i did 20 years ago. if you wanna make her run like new you will need to break down the engine and look for worn parts or damaged parts. My dad had a H that ran crappy we rebuilt her and she ran good til the same part went out inside of the engine bending push rods. Somtimes the cheep comes out expensive. the more you are around somthing the more you will understand it. i would never reuse a sleeve as that was the main problume with my dads H. he had his brother rebuild it and could not get out the no. 2 sleeve so they left it in and reused it. well that was the weak point.

If it misses consistently on one cyl. pull one plug wire at a time and find the guilty party. Then do a compression check, then change plugs to a different cylinder to see if it follows the plug. Then Check the intake side with a propane torch with the nozzle (burner) taken off (outside) to detect intake leaks with fuel to bake it run. (modest amounts used all over the intake manifold and carb gasket area. If none of this gets you closer, give us the info from these tests. JimN
