F-12 cam gear?

I got a cam gear for my F-12, cause I broke the d*mn thing takin it off. Anyway, I got a used one form the great guys at Stauffer Salvage. It has the same casting number on it as my old gear.

When I eyed the two up I noticed the timing marks are different. The old gear has one mark, and is off 1-1/2 teeth from the new gear I got from Stauffer. BUT.....the gear I got from Stauffer has 2 timing marks. The other mark lines up, but the keyway is 180 deg from the old gear.

I'm thinkin the easiest way is to take the cam into work and let the machine shop mill another keyway in the cam. What do you think? Thanks, Doug N

Why not line the two gears so the keyways are in line(you could even use a piece of straight key stock for perfect alignment). Then prick punch a new mark in the the repacment gear to match the old one.

ET, That's what I'm gonna do. I didn't think I could, because it looked like a half tooth off. I took it in today and centerlined the shaft hole to scribe reference marks. I found it was only 1 tooth off, and I'm writing that off to bad machining on the old gear.

Looking at it and laying it out made it possible to see(on my old gear) that it was keyed at an angle, and the jack bolt holes were also machined crooked. Being broached(key slot) crooked would make me understand why it was on so tight to begin with, which is why it broke takin it off. As far as the new gear, I'll have my uncle(the engine builder) degree the cam to make sure it's right on.

Thanks for all of your replies. Doug N

There are three different gears with that part #.3121DX is for 600 to 608, 3121DAX is for is for FS 3035 and up, and 3121DAY is the same as DAX,except DAY came with a new nut. I dont think I would chance messing up a pefectly good gear by rekeying it, just line up the marks and make sure its in time before putting on the front cover. The other suggestion is what Id do, if I understand what hes saying.

John, reread the post. I want to mill a keyway in the CAM, not broach a keyway in the gear. And also, if I line up marks, cam will be 180 deg off. Doug N

No,no,no,no,no..... You didnt! Just wondering, but did you look at the other side of the gear? Just wondering if maybe at the factory they marked the wrong side some how. I know the cam gear on my I4 was stamped on the wrong side for the engine timing and mag timing.

I may be wrong, but I'mthinking the cam gear turns the cam shaft at 1/2 the crank speed. If your timing mark is exactly 180 off it shouldn't make a difference. But what used to be the exhaust stroke would now be compression but the cam would operate the valves in time. Might have to install the mag 180 off or change wires

Wisbaker, Yes, cam does turn at 1/2 speed as crank. I see what you're getting at, timing mag 180 off also. That should work, crank only knows up and down, it's the cam that determines compression, exhaust, or intake. As long as I time the mag at TDC compression, I should be ok.
