Farmall 300 Hydraulics Again

About a week ago I was having problems with my hydraulics on my 300. The pump was bogging the engine down and getting really hot after on a few minutes of running. After some trial and error testing, I discovered that a screen/plug in an orifice in the pressure regulator block had collapsed and was acting like a plug, sending pressure to the hydraulics all the time. I have since gotten this fixed, but the pump still seems to bog the engine down ever so slightly and the pump does get warm still; although not near as bad as it was. After 10 minutes of running, the pump was about as warm to the touch as the side of the block. I am not real familiar with 300's and this is my first Farmall so I would just like to see if this is a normal thing or if I still have problems. Thanks...

The hydraulic system on the 300 uses closed center valves with a constant displacement pump. The orfice and the unloader valve work together to control whether the oil goes to the valves or dumps back to the reservoir. When oil is not being sent to the control valves the systems has a standby pressure of about 60PSI so a little load on the pump is normal when you are not using the valves. As the valve spools and housings wear it is not unusal for this pressure to rise. If it gets excessive you drill out the hole in the orfice a couple of thousands of an inch to bring the standby pressure back down. That really is a last resort measure when every else is OK.

On a system that is being used 150 degrees is not excessive. You would not want to hold your hand on it very long.

It is normal for it to get warm to the touch or hotter when operating for any length of time. If it is no hotter than the engine it is fine. I don't think it should be loading the engine just sitting and running. Did you check the regulator valve out while you were in there?

Yes, I check everything out to make sure nothing was plugged or stuck. Everything functioned as it should. I had it running for a good 15 minutes today cycling the hydraulic and just letting it set. Like I said, the pump was about as warm to the touch as the side of the block. When the hydraulics were not being cycled, the engine would bog down every so slightly. Hardley enough to even know and a million times better than it was. I am guessing that is just how it should be. Plus it might just need used a little now; it had been sitting for 15+ years before I started re-doing it. Thanks for the help!

Matt, I assume you cleaned the screen at the bottom of the resivour? I would try it for a while and see what happens. Keep an eye on the heat as it is a good indicator of problems.

Yes the screen in the bottom of the reservior was cleaned. I will be sure to keep an eye on it just to make sure that I have gotten all the knots worked out. Thanks!!!
