I can't remember if I handled this back before she was parked and died....or died and parked.
But since the old girl is alive and running really nicely, she will probably pull a hay rake next month and should have good fluids. The manual has info but it is 60 years old. What do you guys prefer to put in a good engine to keep it good?

I would agree with the 30wt oil too. I know that's the best if you are going use the tractor for heavy work such as plowing. I would use the 50/50 mix on your antifreeze too. I would change it every 2 years as Jim suggested. Even though it's called permnanent it doesn't mean forever.
If you are going to use the tractor in the winter
you could use 10-30 or 15-40. I use 30wt all year in my garden tractor and I use a dipstick heater if the temp is very cold to preheat it.

What's in the radiator now, Dave? I'd change it out, whatever it is, if only because it's likely been there a while. On my BN, I ran a batch of straight water for a while and it was picking up some rust, so I gave it one hot run with the washing soda mix that they talk about in the manual. Something like two pounds to 13 qts of water. Mix it well in buckets first before poring it into the radiator. Then run the engine hot. Since I don't have shutters on the BN, I just took a piece of newspaper and let the suction of the fan hold it to the grill. Ran it until it was good and hot. It was almost black when I drained it. I let it cool for a bit after I drained it, then refilled it with hot tap water. Ran that for a few days, drained it cold and let the hose water run right down through it for a few minutes, then refilled with 50-50 distilled water and plain old green anti-freeze.

On the oil, we had a discussion here a while back about oil in old, unrebuilt engines. Basically, start out using straight 30 non-detergent oil. At each change add a quart of detergent oil in place of one of the non-detergent until after a few changes you're running detergent entirely. That's all to avid having a chunk of crud break loose all at once and plug something up. Once she's on a diet of regular oil, you can make your own choice about a multi-vis, especially if you have cold starting issues.

The only place I'd stay with straight 30 is in the oil filler cup. I've found that 10-30, for example is too light and it gets sucked into the combustion air and will blow out through the ehaust a little. Going to straight 30 there solved that issue.

Not sure where my head was.

I live and have lived in areas where straight Wt oils are too thick when cold (Minnesota, Montana, Colorado high country) so I believe in multi Wt oils. 15-40 Rotella, or RPM Delo are favorites. 10 40 Automotive oil is also very fine. Issues with the additives in multi Wt oils are real but only are a concern when the engine is operated at speeds and temperatures that cause failure in other components first.
Synthetic oils in a broken in engine are my first choice. They do not have the breakdown issues of even straight Wt oils. Remember (as you indicated) the manuals were written way before the era of radical improvement in fuels and oils. In coolant, I like a product that is compatible with multiple system metals. (orange) 50 50 mix. changed every two years. JimN

Dave, you will get a variety of recommendations on the oil I think. Myself I use Kendall HD SAE 30 weight oil in all my Farmalls gas and diesel. I have never had any oil related problems and have used this for more than 30 years in some of them. I run a 50/50 mix on anti-freeze. I mix it myself, just can't seem to buy pre mixed. It is almost as high as the pure stuff.
