Farmall C Timing Gear Question

I have a C that I recently restored and have been using for about 8 months, it was running great until i went to make some adjustments on the govenor and carb. The motor had been rebuilt by family members earlier. The engine turns great, but the the govenor, hydraulics, and distributor have stopped. By looking down the timing cover from the governor opening I can see the crank turn, but not the timing gears. What locks the timing gear to the crank? Is it going to be as simple as pulling off the front of the tractor and slipping in a small part, bolt, or will it mean a full overhaul? I have not ever gone that deep in the motor, any advice is greatly appreciated.

First pull the gov gear out the hole since you have removed the dist. It is posible that the gov gear is the one that is stripped. You can replace it without removing front pedestal ect. its not easy to get it back in time but can be done. With the tappet cover off do the pushrods move up and down if they do its not the cam gear and the one on the crank is a press fit so if you are lucky it will be the gov gear.

None of the timing set is turning, I removed as many bolts as i could on the timing cover and I can see all the way down to the crank shaft. When the crank shaft is turned, none of the timing set turns. Could the Woodruff key have sheared and cause the timing gear to spin? I can turn the timing set using a screwdriver and turn it gently with not much effort.

That timing gear is a press fit on the camshaft and it probably has a woodruff key too. You can tell if something is wrong with the cam gear when you bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Both valves on that piston should be closed. The timing gear is meshed with the crankshaft gear. Here's a picture of them. Hal

I'm not sure what you're looking at. If you see a gear through the timing cover, it's the cam gear.

A gear at the front of the crank drives the cam, to the upper left aa you look from the front.
Continuing to the upper left, the cam gear then drives the gear that turns both the governor and distributor.

I'm thinking you may have got into trouble with your work on the governor.

Try pulling your governor and distributor back off. Pull off the flyweights and bearings, etc. on the governor side, then pull the gear out. Bring the engine around to TDC on #1 compression. You might have to move it a little bit by hand to get it to line up so you can see it, but there should be a punch mark visible on the cam gear (there's actually two of them. If you can see them both, great, but the timing cover may allow you to see only one). You should see two corresponding punch marks on the governor/distributor drive gear. Put that gear back in so that the marks line up with the mark(s) on the cam gear.

Put your governor back together. With the rotor lined up to point to #1 on your distributor, put the distributor back on. Hook it all back up and reset your timing.
