I am working on a 560 Diesel for a neighbor. It will run for a bit, then git real low on power, then die off. After it quits it will fire right back up and repeat the process. I have changed fuel filters, changed the rubber line from the 2nd filter to the injection pump(the others are steel) and checked transfer pump pressure. I did notice that if I removed the return line from the pump and put a piece of hose on it and let it return to a can it runs much better and it didnt quit. Someone said there is a check ball in the reutnr line. Is this true? what does it do and does it have to be three? Have you guys ran into this before?

The governor ring in the injection pump is what is causing your problem. Time the pump before you pull it. Most diesel pump shops can reasonably either repair it or offer you with an exchange pump ready to go. Most of the time you need to keep the fittings for the inlet and return lines. If you are not sure of what to do then don't be afraid to let someone else do it.

Sure sounds like the return vent check is plugging up. There is a plastic washer in that pump and it is slowly coming apart, tiny piece by tiny piece.

Take a CLEAN can, pull the little square timing cover, catch the fuel and see if you get the black debris that folks like to call "coffee grounds" in with the fuel. If so, the pump needs rebuilding.

I'm doing the same style pump on my Gleaner combine and the symptoms were identical to yours.

The rebuild seal kit cost $32 and the new vent check valve set me back $27.

Allen you are dead right on this one. It is very common on the roosamaster pumps to do this. Fix the pump and just take the check valve out of the bottom of the tank and replace with a elbow. The check valve does not need to be there.

Don: You said transfer pump, 560 doesn't have a transfer pump, or I should say, at least the Farmall doesn't.

On that return line, don't know about the check valve, if mine had one it worked for 17 years without a hitch. Bear in mind that was 40 years ago. I can see the check valve idea, holding fuel from graviety feeding back to the injection pump, when tractor is not running. I do know that a diesel will not run if the return line is plugged. I had that happen with a Deere and a very similar Rossa Master pump.

Thank you all for the replies. Hugh the transfer pump on the 560 is a 2 vane pump, which is an integral part of the injection pump. You cannot gravity feed an injection pump. They create no vaccuum by themselves and they would starve in gravity fed them

Don: I guess this is a case of terminology differences, the vane pump device you speak of will not suck fuel from below the engine, or at least my 560 and 656 wouldn't. The fuel had to flow there by graviety. I had a neighbor used a 282 as a stationary engine, same Rossa Master pump as my 560 and he had to use an electric transfer pump, from a tank almost level with crank shaft. I had a John Deere forestry skidder, fuel tank back of articulation point and below the engine It had almost identical Rossa Master to my 560 and 656, but had to use a cam shaft driven fuel transfer pump. Those last two are what I was refering to as a fuel transfer pump.

Have you checked to flow from the fuel tank to the filter when it dies. I had this problem on my 756 D for a while and I always was in a hurry so I would just take it pff at the filter and blow back with my air hose, then it might rum for a couple of days before it did it again. I still had not persued the problem with it quit doing it.

I had the check valve stick on one tractor one time but all it did was cause the return lines between the injectors to burst.
