Farmall A is a quitter

Took apart Zenith carb after cleaning a varnished fuel tank on my daughter's recently acquired tractor. Cleaned (but didn't replace) all jets and left float level at existing setting as it worked great previously. Needle and seat operated fine. Tractor starts immediately but quits after running 5-10 minutes. Fuel strainer bowl is full, carb fuel bowl drain flows freely. Did make her a new cork fuel-cap gasket, however, both vent tubes in cap are open and tractor also stops without fuel cap on, too. Has excellent fire and always starts right back up but starves out within seconds. Idles great when running.

Problem turned out to be an occasionally sticking fuel needle. I rebuilt the carb as it was prior to my cleaning it and the fuel tank. Ended up buying another kit ($32.00 for a fuel needle, seat and couple of gaskets -excluding jets!??) In this kit was a spring that attaches to the needle and float. Didn't use the spring before as her Farmall A parts book nor the service manual showed it and it wasn't in the carb when I disassembled it for the first rebuild-honest. Long story short- use the spring....gravity alone ain't going to make that needle drop open every time.

Red flags 1.you cleaned the tank, you may have some crud still floating around that restricts the outlet. Remove the gas cap, use a light, and you can see to poke a wire into the fuel outlet. 2. As to the carb, if you did not soak the carb in carb cleaner, preferably a couple of hours or even overnight, then blow out with compressed air, you could have loosend something, as with the tank, and have a partially plugged jet.

Did soak the carb overnight. Fuel flows freely from disconnected fuel line and also the drain plug in the carb as the carb does get fuel. Changed needle and seat again this afternoon. Double checked float level @ 1-5/32 per the book and jets are open. Ran about 15 minutes and decided it was fixed and started down the road to my daughter's place - made it out of my barn lot almost to the road. Same story -it quit. Starts again and runs 5 seconds a couple attempts and then quits for good. There is still a super hot spark from the distributor when grounded to the block right after it dies. This is a 12 Volt converted system if that matters.

Fuel strainer bowl and the carb's float bowl are full. First thing I checked was to see if fuel would drain from the float bowl drain and it did. There isn't a fuel inlet strainer screen in the carb- parts book shows one, though. Thought maybe the float was sticking and just enough fuel is seeping by the needle to eventually fill the bowl and it runs long enough to empty the float bowl. Tapped on it with a screwdriver - didn't work.

Does it by chance have an in line fuel filter? If so it must be for gravity fed fuel systems. If it has one try taking it off and see what happens.

No in-line fuel filter. Fuel strainer screen is clean, too.

Pull the drain plug out of the bottom of the carb and let the gas flow for a good 5 plus minutes. Catch it of course. You should have a good steady flow of gas for 5 plus minutes. If you don't then you have a problem some place. If you don't have that flow check again at the fuel line going to the carb. If you have it at the line but not the drain then you know its in the carb that you have a problem
