Help- 560D Won't Start

Greetings,

I'm hoping some of you experts folks can help me out.

I have had a 560D for about three years. I had no place to keep it, so it has been stored (inside) at a friends place. Well, life sometimes gets in the way of fun, so it sat for a year and a half.

A month ago I put the cleaned up generator back on, installed a new voltage regulator and a new (well, 1-1/2 years old but unused) battery. Hit the starter button and she fired right up. One rear was flat so I moved it outside for the tire guy to access it. That was finally fixed (including a new rim) yesterday (sat outside the whole time).

Today, I go to move the tractor. Hit the start switch. She turns over, but cranking sounded a little slow. Put the charger/starter on it for a few minutes and tried again. Turning over faster now (sounded like normal cranking speed to me) but no joy. Hmmmm...

After more charging and fiddling with the throttle position and fuel cutoff (I can never remember whether pushed in is RUN or OFF) still no joy.

I opened the fuel filter bleed screws and fuel ran freely from both filters. I had added five gallons of (you guessed it) 1-1/2 year old diesel before trying to start, but there was still some fuel in it before I added, so I don't think I got air in the system. I checked the oil bath air filter. That looked OK. When cranking, the rain cap on the stack bobs up and down, so I think compression is there. Glow plug meter pegs all the way right when I press the switch and I could hear the charger load up when I pressed it also. I've never had a problem starting this tractor before. Always fired up one first or second attempt.

I'm stumped. Clearly, I'm missing part of the fuel + air + compression = boom equation but I'm out of ideas at this point. Tried jumping it with another tractor too, lots of cranking, no fire.

Nothing has been fiddled with since the last time I had her running, unless someone else did it without my knowledge. I don't see anything obvious. Only difference is that it sat outside.

Any ideas where to look? What could have been harmed by getting wet? That's one beauty of diesel. Only electricity you need is for the starter motor to spin it. Could the starter be spinning the motor, but just not fast enough?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and sorry about the long post.

Hal W

Hal,

Pull it and it'll start. Then, give that battery a chance to get charged up.

For what it's worth, the worst thing you can do with an old tractor is just leave it set. They stay happy when they are worked.

Hal: Jimmy is right about getting fuel, now having said that and having owned a 560D for 17 years and 11,000 hours, I can tell you I have had the same experience as you, not often but 3-4 times.

I just hooked either 300, 656 or 1066 out front and towed it in 4th gear, hi TA with clutch out until it started firing and running smooth. Set your throttle about PTO speed and tow it very close to same speed as 4th at that throttle setting. Don't tow it over speed, best to be a bit under. I have towed my 560 close to half mile, before it started firing. Don't ask me why, I've never figured it out. Each time I did that, after very next shutdown, it fired right up again and never gave anymore problems until next time which was probably 2-3 years later. I've asked many an expert, including IH regional service reps, and still no answer. All they ever told me is I shouldn't have towed it like that to start it. Well guess what, those experts didn't have cows to feed and milk, in other words it didn't affect their cash flow one damn bit.

Furthermore, towing the 560 didn't hurt my cash flow one damn bit. I farmed for many years, and my highest net yearly income came from the years the 560 and 656 diesels were my main source of power.

Does it smoke when you are trying to start it, if not no fuel if so it is not turning over fast enought. I had this problem with my 460D years ago starter needed rebuilt and didn't realize it. Good Battery's, Good Starter, Good Glow Plugs, Good Compression, Good Fuel System, and Good fuel Equale's good starting. It should Start on year and half old fuel but maybe not as good. My 460D turns over when starting like a gas tractor with the plugs taken out.
