What are the best fuel burn numbers you"ve gotten from a 560D/282? What would be typical gallons/hr with a moderate load and say 3/4 RPM?

Moderate load at 3/4 throttle should come in between 1 and 1.5 gallons per hour. I had two 282 diesels close to 17 years each and total of 25,000 hours on the two, (560 and 656). On a 9' haybine they would hit the 1 Imperial gallon per hour, roughly 1.25 US gallons.

I don't think they hit the 2 gallon mark on any work, even plowing or disking. Truly the most efficient diesels I ever owned. My 1066 would burn 5 times the fuel, but it didn't generate 5 times the hp.

Grandpa always talked about how far his would go on a tank of fuel. His later tractors wouldn't get close and he missed that. What do you think it is that makes that particular combination so efficient?

I suspect a number of factors, mainly design engineers got just about everything correct. I also had a 6 cylinder turbo Deere that was very close to 560 and 656 on efficiency. One thing they all had in common was Rossa Master injection. Just maybe Rossa Master is or was the best system. They were very sensitive to water contamination of the fuel. Nothing would cook a Rossa Master injection pump faster than water in fuel. Maybe farmers just didn't want an injection system that sensitive.

Another item to consider, Farmalls of the 40s, 50s 60s and 70s were among the best drawbar tractors as it applies to heavy tillage. Everyone wanted power everything for ease of operation, and with that we lost efficiency. I never could figure out why folks wanted to put a loader on a Farmall, they were a drawbar tractor, and there were far better loader tractors on the market. Basically those whiners destroyed the best drawbar tractor on the market.

Yeah, power this and power that adds up in parasitic losses. Also more cylinders add power but not at a 1:1 ratio. Efficiency suffers is the engine layout is not carefully planned.

Hugh, you may be on to something about those Roosa Master pumps. My 350 has one and it doesn't burn much fuel at all. Then again my 666 is easy on fuel too. It has an American Bosch on it.

Yep,

The only other engine that might possibly run a bit cheaper is the slimed down version of the same engine that went in the 460D.

One of the most economical engines ever built.

I could pull left and right rakes with my 460D in 4th at about 900 RPM's on 1/2 gal per Hr. On a 7 ft roam offset 2 1/4 gal per hr.

Jimmy: Is it you or Gary that uses that sign off on e mails, "from the other side of the big river"? I know I get it from a Missourian.

Your fuel consumption with the 460D is as I would expect. We were using imperial gallons back then, 1.25 US gallons. I remember the 560 and 656 being exceptional at anything less than pto speed. They would hold in there steady as a rock on 1 gph on 9' haybine or baling with thrower and wagon. Tillage went higher, but I'm thinking not a lot over 2 gph or 2.5 US gallons.

Hugh I was just looking at the fuel tank sizes. I had a Super M Gas, 400D, and the 460D at one time for a while M 21 gal., 400 18 gal and the 460 33 gal. On the 7 ft roam the 400 would use 2 gal and out pulled the 460 some, how ever the 460 would whip the 400 on PTO. On a 9 FT Haybine I could mow 80 acres with the 400, 100 acres with the 460, and after 30 acres with the M you had better go to the fuel tank.
