Hello, I have an 1943 H. After conditioning and tedding, the temp gauge reads just over 100 degrees. I think this way to low. It has shutters on the radiator and I would like to adjust them to bring it up to proper operating temp. My manual has nothing in it about operating temp. Looks like I may need another manual or two. In the mean time any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks JW

Yes the shutters were/are for dual fuel systems, but like everything else on this tractor Some one "modified" it to gas only. Muck up the hood and threw away the smaller gas tank. The 12 volt conversion consisted of a 12 volt battery in the battery box and a 6 V generator and cutout relay left in place. Needless to say this finally smoked while I was using it in the field. I have it fixed right now. JW

I put a new thermostat in my H a couple weeks ago. The old one was totally corroded almost to nothing left. The aftermarket gauge came up to about 165 with the new thermostat, but then the next day the gauge will hardly move, but I felt the side of the head and it is nice and toasty, so I guess the gauge probably gave up the ghost. You might check your gauge also.

Minimum operating temperature should be 160 degrees - 180 degrees is better. Anything lower and you will get cylinder wash from unburned fuel and premature wear.

Put a 180 thermostat in it would be my suggestion.

Where is your temp probe at?

Most any gas or diesel engine will operate most efficiently at 180-200 degrees F. Considering that the cooling system on tractors is usually oversized to handle heavy loads for long times in hot weather, it is no wonder the temp on your tractor is running cool.
Put a known good thermometer in the radiator fill opening to check what is coming out of the engine before going through the radiator.(BE CAREFUL OPENING THE CAP!!)
Adjust the shutter so the engine is operating midrange so the oil gets hot enough to burn off the impurities collected from the combustion process.

My SH runs about that temp even in heavy work. Ckeck your gage first it might be reading low. If you can touch the radiator without burns it is cool. I put a thermomitor in the top with the cap off and found one gage was off. wasn't the shutters for the dual fuel engines?

You can also put a thermostat in it. I think they are available at most auto parts stores. I believe the part number is 800 but not sure, been awhile since I bought one. Ed
