I've been thinking about buying a Farmall 400 that is in pretty good shape. Runs good Hydo seems to be in good shape. Has a converted fast-hitch/three point hitch. Tin is straight. Price is 1400. Does anyone have any good or bad things they have had with a 400 before? Let me know!

I have owned a Farmall 400 for about seven years here in Kansas and use it regularly to run a 7' wide mower and disc. It has been a great tractor however just today, I heard some metallic knocking in the engine. Perhaps piston slap? I would recommend the tractor however, anyone out there have a recommendation for engine repair? Rebuild my own or go for a short block? Thanks.

Robert, the 400 is a real work horse. Capable of playing with a 3 bottom plow or 10 foot disc. Handle a 15 foot mower pretty good too. The worst thing is they do burn gas, but start good in cold weather. If it is as good as it looks where else could you get a tractor for 1400 that will do what the 400 will do. New riding mowers cosr a lot more than that.

If the rubber is good, motor is strong with good compression, good oil pressure while hot, decent clutch then why are you not there picking it up? If the TA is out, oh well. It makes it like the other 90% of those tractors that have a bad TA in em. If rubber holds air and is round and black it isn't that bad of a deal eithor really.

Good tractor, only made a couple years. Standard IH set of problems that probably were fixed many years ago on one that"s survived this long. Big one was the rear end bearings - the 400 has almost as much hp as a gas 560 if it has oversized high compression pistons.

I'd love to have a 400/450 but never see them for sale up here in Ontario. For that price, I'd ask if he has a second or third one he's also willing to sell! But I'd make sure the TA is in good working condition first, I hear they can be expensive to fix or replace. Certainly is a heck of a lot cheaper than what folks are asking for a Super MTA!

For $1400, you can afford to fix the TA, and it's not that difficult or expensive to do.

That's a 2700 dollar tractor (minimum) here anyday anyway. If you don't want it I do. I'd be in the DOdge CTD in a heartbeat.

I'd like to know where they bring 2-3000 ??
They are a great tractor I think 1400 is a very good deal . I had one a couple years ago , rebuilt motor and new torque . It took me almost a year to get 1600 for it .
