Last fall my 656 hydrostat diesel quit charging steadily. Sometimes tellite would to out at higher rpm. Had the local alternator man check out alternator and it is okay. Changed regulator and still had intermittent charging at high rpms but better than before the change. Put two new batteries in this spring(others lasted 10 years) (Yeah I know that is unusual) Cleaned grounding terminal on alternator/regulator terminal and now charges at or above 1300 rpm consistently. Also charges at 700 rpm. Does not charge from 800-1200rpm. Don't know where else to look. Pulled the 4 connector plug at the regulator and cleaned but no change in charging status. Checked continuity from alternator to regulator on all wires ok. Any suggestion?

The alternator was not disassembled when checked. Just put on a machine that run it for a few seconds.

Was the alternator disassembled when it was checked? It sounds like the brushes are getting to the end of their life, either worn or hanging up. Also need to check the slip ring condition and their connections to the rotor winding.

You may have a broken wire or loose connection in the rotor. I makes & breaks contact as the RPM changes.

I am certainly not an expert on electricity, but I would still be highly suspicious of the alternator.
