Got my little Farmall 544 Row-Crop Diesel Basket Case split to do the TA. Found that the metal suction tube has been removed from the rear end. Someone has tapped the suction passage in the rear of the clutch housing to accept a large pipe barb, clamped on a long piece of hyd hose and stuck it down into the rear end. Anyone ever heard of this? I'm guessing there was a problem with the original tube and someone was too cheap to fix it right. I think I see a major problem with this, because if I remember right, that return pipe from the rockshaft housing should go directly into the big suction tube. Guess I'll have to pop off the top link bracket and have a look. The hydraulics were operating normally.

I parted out a 544 hydro and it had the same set-up. I thought it was strange at the time with the rubber hose.

Kind of makes you wonder if the UAW guys were taking a break or the engineers were smoking dope.
