It's been a while since I tore my engine apart and now I forget where some of the seals go. One is a 2-piece felt seal and the other is a 1 piece felt seal. One goes on the back of the crank and the other on the front right? Also is there Any little secrets I should know about when doing a complete out-of-frame rebuild. Thanks a lot

The one piece will go into the timing cover to keep dirt and dust from getting into the front seal. The two piece is for the rear main seal. They will be easier to install if put in dry. Oil them real good prior to mounting the two brackets onto the block.

The one that goes in the timing cover is the rubber one right?

Your repacement seal will be an ordinary looking oil seal, probably 1/4" to 3/8" thick. It should be a double lip style with a spring inside the larger lip. Install the spring side to the oil. This is opposite the original but the sping will rust off if installed toward the front.

The original front crankshaft seal was a leather/felt combination about an inch thick. The felt was toward the front to serve as a dust seal and the lip of the leather seal also faced the front rather than facing the oil side. IH engineering must have been more concerned about keeping dirt from being blown in from the fan than they were about oil leaks. On the otherhand, it is very rare to see the front seal leak unless the main bearings are really worn or the crankcase ventilation system is restricted.

If the one piece is large for the front seal it is most likely the dust seal for the water pump. It goes in behind the pulley.

Use lots of engine oil when installing the pistons and oil the sleeves and bearings too. Be sure to prime your oil pump with clean engine oil before installing it on the engine. Take your time and if there's any questions post them someone will respond. Hal

The easiest way is just to put it in a pan of oil and turn the shaft until oil comes out below the drive gear. The M oil pump is submerged in oil when installed and the pan full of oil. It will actually prime itself as a result of being submerged but priming it will ensure that all the surfaces have lube on them.

On engines where the oil pumps are not submerged it is important to prime them with something that will not easily drain off. Coating the pumping assembly with vasoline or engine assembly lube will ensure that the pump can draw enough vacuum to get oil into it when the engine is started.

The best I remember the 2 piece is for the rear.
