Why convert? Good grounds and large enough cables to carry the current and they're flawless.

I converted my 400 recently using an alternator from a chevy caprice.(mid to late 80's). The bracket that holds the alternator on the motor of the car is perfect to use on the 400. There is a 3/8 tapped hole in the front of the radiator spout on top. No drilling, tapping or modifying. looks good too. I used the original u-shaped bracket for the lower hole on the alternator, same belt. You can probably pick one up at a local salvage yard. I also swithced to a 12 volt coil no resistor required. My 2 cents. Lee

Converted my M, and will do the SM as soon as I find time. Used a WalMart heavy duty battery, Delco 10SI 3-wire alternator, original coil, 1970 Chrysler ballast resistor, all new wires, and a set of halogen lights. Total cost about $120.

Oh man, I predict many replies. My preference is a Delco 10SI alternator. I prefer the flame thrower coil which allows me to increase my point gap from 0.023 to 0.043. I prefer the electronic ignition which allowed me to toss my points and condenser (and problems) away. Others prefer points over electronic ignition, others prefer to keep the 6V and not convert, and on and on.

There is alot of info if you do a search and also click on the Articles link below. New wiring (proper gauge), soldered connections with heat shrink tubing, etc etc are prefered by me also.

Keep us posted.
