Guys,
He said the CARB bowl was empty. Mine did the very same thing. If the engine is shut down with the bowl full, the float has the needle closed, and any back wash would pull on the needle in effcet making it tighter and sealing better. Therefore not letting anymore fuel by and his carb would stay full. Now Im not saying he doesnt have multiple problems, but mine was simply a probelm inside the carb that I never found, but after repalcing the carb and float,I dont have that problem anymore.

Yeah, your fuel pump needs a rebuild,>Link

But your carb should not be empty after only sitting overnight. If your carb is empty, then your petcock is leaking. It's not possible for the fuel in the bowl to leak back down, cause the inlet is about 1-1/2" above the float level. If just sitting overnight, you should be able to fire it up and pick up prime again before it dies. Doug N

In my case you can usually get it to fire on the first crank . It will run a few seconds then stall. Then you have to crank it multiple times with no indication of firing at all then suddenly it comes to life and runs perfect. So it sounds like the fuel is leaking back down but not out of my bowl.

Tim, it sounds like your float level might be set too low. My F-12 always started good too. I remember when I was having problems with the pump, I cracked the line at the fuel pump and nothing came out(Fuel that is stored in the line should've come out), but when I cranked it, it fired right up and never died. It ran long enough to pick up a prime again.

If I remember right, when the bowl was empty it only took 8 or 9 complete revolutions of the crank to prime the carb and let it fire. Instead of cranking half turns, I would just keep turning it continuously until it lit off. Don't know if I could do that anymore, but I usetacould:)

Got the same problem on my F-14 that Ive never yet addressed. So is there a check valve in the fuel pump that is leaking then? Ive had the pump apart but its been several years and I dont recall.

If memory serves me the fuel pump doesn't have a check ball, but rather two small plungers that act as th valves. They sit above the diaphram, and one acts as a valve for the fuel being sucked in, the other for the fuel being pumped out. When I redid mine I had to get two good plungers out of a pump off a (cough)deere because nobody makes em like the original ones anymore. I had the smae problem, The fuel would be pushed part way up, than leak back down past the the plungers till it was balanced with the amount of fuel in the tank.

PS if you do need new plungers I wouldn't recommend the replacements that come with the kit from thefordsonhouse, I could not get them to fit, let alone seal.

There is a 4" high tower on top of the hood above the carb. It should have a vented brass plug that will screw out and then you have a 5/16" size hole to pour gas into. The fuel is leaking past the fuel pump while it is setting. Open the wing-like plug and pour gas in above until it comes out the opening on the plug. Happy trails.
