Start in 3rd or 4th - Farmall 130?

I have a '57 Farmall 130, which I often use to pull a trailer with firewood, rocks, etc. Is is better when wanting to use road gear (4th) to start the load in 3rd gear and then shift into 4th when moving and crunch the gears a little, or to just start in 4th and abuse the clutch? Neither feels quite right to me - help!

I just never could bring myself to start out in 4th. I had to have those wheels rolling even if it was just a little before I moved to 4th gear. Never seemed to bother my grandad though. Even in his pickups he'd start out in high gear sometimes. Either that or he'd skip 2nd and go to high. Even with a full load of sweet potato or watermelons. Uphill.

Dave:

I can double clutch a Formula Ford racecar, lap after lap, but I cannot for the life of me double clutch a farm tractor.

So... In my opinion, there is no real good answer; both methods are flawed for me. Start in 4th all the time and I will eventually need to replace my clutch. Start in a lower gear and shift, and I will finally need to replace the gear from grinding.

I try to get a little tractor movement going in high, stab the clutch pedal to let the engine recover, let the clutch out again while still rolling, and get going a little faster, stab the clutch pedal again, gaining speed each time. It seems to work pretty well with minimum slippage and wear to the clutch and no wear to the gears from grinding.

It's probably the WORST way of getting it done, but I've never had to replace a clutch and never had to replace a gear. mike durhan

What Brian said, plus you will get better with practice.

You will need to figure out the best engine speed to slow it down to. How long to pause before going into 4th. Travel speed vs. engine speed when engaging.....

I'm pretty good at this with all my many tractors but still miss a shift here and there.

Now when you double clutch it also helps to drop the throttle down. I had a heck of a time getting this process down (one really needs three hands to do it effectively), but it does work with very minimal grinding of the gears...when you get it right. It goes like this, at least on an H and a B..should be the same on an A for the most part.
1) Start rolling in 3rd..get up to regular speed via application of throttle. 2) In one smooth (eventually) motion, push clutch, pop tranny into neutral, release clutch, bring throttle down to idle, push clutch, shift to 4th, apply throttle as you let off clutch.
3) cruise on down the highway with a smirk of experience on your face.
That should work....but it will take practice!

Learn to double-clutch.

I do double clutch it, but it still rattles a little sometimes - maybe I'm just not very good at it because the clutch doesn't drag.

If you can stop some of the grinding by double clutching you are doing better than most. Farmalls and other tractors of that age were not made to shift on the go nor were they made to doule clutch. If it works for you go for it.

Most older Farmalls had trouble starting in high gear without anything hooked behind un less you were going down hill. The lesser of the two is shifting on the go. Did it on M's for many years and never had a gear problem.

Dave, in my opinion the gear grinding will do less damage than slipping the clutch trying to get a load started. I have tractors here that have had the gears ground a little for many years and it hasn't hurt them much yet.
