have a diesel 424. Had a small coolant leak 2 yrs ago so I replaced the head and gasket which was quite damaged. This didn"t seem to change the leak at all. Continued to get a small amount of steam out of the oil filler pipe but nothing in the oil pan. While mowing this weekend, got bogged down for a short period of time and the leak got SUDDENLY much worse. Fair amount of steam though the oil filler so I shut down. There is not free water in the oil pan but there is condensation. Any ideas??

Are you sure I don't need to worry about steam coming from the oil filler pipe?? I can put a thermostat in the engine and I'll be OK??

Several questions are raised. Do you add coolant regularly to the radiator?
Do you work the tractor substantially, or does it get mild infrequent operation that doesn't get it warmed up?
After sitting for 3-4 days if you loosened the oil drain plug, would a bit of coolant come out?
There are several internal places for leaks. from a cracked head, to internal block core plugs (Often incorrectly called freeze plugs. Sleeves can be responsible for leaks with pinholes and cracks.
If the answer to are you adding coolant is yes, I would pull the valve cover and oil pan and put a radiator pressure checker on the radiator (no more than the pressure listed on the cap) and look for leaks into the internals. it might take a day or two to show up. JimN

It gets worked infrequently but hard when worked.

I run it without a thermostat and the radiator is not pressurized as the cap does not fit well. Steam never leaks around the radiator cap.

I've never seen water on the dipstick except this time there was some condensation.

The radiator and block are drained each winter, but I live in Florida and hard freezes are uncommon.

Sorry about the late answer, I have been out active fishing. The lack of Thermostat will allow the unit to run so cold that unless worked pretty much to the max, it will get condensation in it. If it is not loosing coolant then not to worry, just put in a thermostat, and new cap. It needs it for good efficiency. It is also important to use coolant, not just water. the minerals in plain water will build up and cause issues. As will lack of rust inhibitor, and other needed additives. Let no one tell you water is OK, as a test of the system maybe, but it needs 50/50 Mix to be correct. JimN
