Today I finally got a chance to take the inpection cover off the 686 t/a. I did what Owen said and here's what happened. First I just moved the handle back and forth. It seemed to compress and release as it should. Next I put the tractor in neutral and blocked the clutch down. I could turn it by hand very easily. But the clutch disk wouldn't wiggle between the disks eventhough it wasn't being compressed. So am I correct in saying that the t/a clutch is shot? How can you fix this without splitting the tractor? And how much should I expect to pay to get this Fixed? Thanks for your help, Mark

With the clutches released you should be able to turn the TA assembly. You said that it turns easily. It should turn in one direction only. If you can turn it both ways the overrunning clutch is not holding. The disk in the TA clutch sould be able to turn both ways independent of the clutch cover/flywheel when the TA clutch is released. Another way you can check to make sure the clutch is releasing is you can turn the TA assembly, now take the block out that is holding the main clutch released. You should still be able to turn the TA assembly but now the TA clutch disk should not be turning when you turn the rest of it. If it does not turn this way then the TA clutch is not releasing. If the disk can not spin when released you will not have the slower TA speed. The most usual causes are out of adjustment, one of the pivot pins coming out of a lever, or the disk lining coming apart and wedging tight. The cast plate sometimes breaks around the lever pivot pins. A missing pivot pin can usually be replace through the hole on top. To replace the clutch you have to split the tractor at the main clucth. The TA clutch is removed through the top after removing the drie shaft through the front of the clutch housing.

I don't get what you mean by wiggle? If the clutch is disengaged you should be able to move the disc. If I remember right you lost the t/a side, which has nothing to do with the t/a clutch. t/a clutch runs direct drive only. It sounds like your t/a is shot to me.
