IH 424 Gas Misting out of Gas Cap

On my '67 424 Gasoline, when I drive around on varying terrain, gasoline blows out past the seal on the gas cap. The gasoline isn't coming out of the vent holes (2) but at the mating surface where the cap screws tight onto the tank. First guess would obviously be that the gasket on the gas cap is worn or missing but this is a brand new cap directly from IH. The reason I got this cap is that the previous one did the same thing (it looked old but also had the two vent holes in it). Is it possible that the mating surface on the tank itself is worn thin enough that the new gasket doesn't seal properly? When I put the cap on, it's pretty tight when you turn it all the way. Should I take the gasket from the other cap and double them up? Or. . . . does this point to a problem elsewhere?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have read earlier that the free gas cap offer would end in May so went to Navistar gas cap site to check and after seeing all the posts on this site about people recieving free gas caps was suprised to see this posted.

"Note: Due to low volume of gas cap requests, and high inventory the FREE GAS CAP offer will be extended indefintly."

Speaking of gas caps, I put a new one on the super C many years ago when the free gas caps became available. Now I have to leave it loose or it won"t run long. The vent is pluged. I switched with the H & then the H stalled. So I know it is the cap. Is there any thing I can do to open it? Soaking in carb cleaner would maybe help but could destroy the gasket too. I know it will take the paint off. Do you think I could get another new one? Do they keep a record of the serial numbers?

Teddy just get a new one. They are still giving them away. Not sure about the sight, but I think it is freeIHgascap.com. Someone will be along in a bit with the link. Just send them the serial number for all your gas tractors and they will ups them to you in a couple days.

If you can find a IH dealership that was in business in the late 70s they will probably have the tool to reform the tank filler. The tool was released at the same time the the free replacement filler cap program was begun.

SO this is at least a partially common occurrence?

Chris, your rim of the filler neck likely has a small dent or rough spot on it. There is a tool to fix them with, but I don't know where you might find one.
